Interview Questions – Up Close and Personal with Gutta Mayne

How long have you been making music?
Ans: 11yrs

Do you remember the very first song you composed?
Ans: Yes I was 19yrs old – it was a song about getting high. Everyone that heard it had liked it and some people even thought it was someone that was already famous. The song was called getting high so good.

How did music making happen?
Ans: A friend started a song and told me to take the beat home. Writing the lyrics came easy; when I recorded I couldn’t hear my own voice because the mic was not connected to the headphones. I thought I wasn’t going to be able to do it, but it turned out great.

What came first in the process of making the songs – lyrics, concept, melody or the creative ideas?
Ans: The lyrics came first. I composed it (organizing the song) I practiced singing, and then went on to recording.

How was it in the growing up years?
Ans: It was very adventurous as I was fighting the whole time I was growing up. I probably could have been a professional boxer or UFC fighter. My city was overrun by gang violence and there were only two choices for me – get bullied or stand up and fight. I stood up and fought. I partied a lot, hung out with friends and was always on the streets.

Did Arizona have any influence on the music you create?
Ans: Yes, it had lot of influence mainly the city I lived. My music is about what I’ve been through in Casa Grande, Arizona. The street life helped mold the music that I have created.
