The thing is, Taylor Swift has never shied away from accepting Shakespeare’s influence in her music and songwriting. Most recently, we could see that in her newest album ‘Like of a Showgirl’. Swift has just released a brand new music video for her single ‘The Fate of Ophelia’. It is a character which she borrowed from Shakespeare’s one of the most influential plays by William Shakespeare. Taylor Swift’s music video for ‘The Fate of Ophelia’ has made its online premiere on YouTube, arriving just over 48 hours after its initial nationwide screening in theaters. The elaborate video, which serves as the visual for the lead single from her new album, is joined on the platform by the lyric videos for all 11 remaining tracks from her blockbuster release, ‘The Life of a Showgirl’, all of which are YouTube exclusive.
In the song, Swift’s keen lyrical pen grants Ophelia a new destiny. She spared her the tragedy found in Shakespeare’s text. It is a move reminiscent of her 2008 hit ‘Love Story’, which gave Romeo and Juliet a happy ending. However, the new music video for ‘The Fate of Ophelia’ goes further. It not only rewrites the original Hamlet narrative but also ambitiously reimagines all the major artistic interpretations of the character across history. Swift followed what was clearly months of intense research, immersed herself in four centuries of Ophelia’s history. She explored all the various portrayals of Hamlet’s tragic love interest over time, paying tribute to the artists who resonated with the character’s fate. In her self-directed music video, which features her Eras Tour dancers, the singer successfully brought countless different personas to life. She rapidly transformed into each one in under four minutes. The video serves as a comprehensive visual journey through Ophelia’s enduring artistic legacy.
The video’s striking opening sees Swift emerge directly from a painting, echoing Friedrich Wilhelm Theodor Heyser’s 1900 Ophelia. She was dressed in a long white gown with golden hair swept back as Ophelia. Then the singer dramatically rises from her famous river deathbed, propelling herself into a vibrant world. From this resurrected state, she immediately begins to tap into the real-life struggles of legendary starlets who faced analogous tragedies. Here, she channeled figures from Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor to Ronnie Spector.
Swift then seamlessly shifts her focus to another iconic visual reference: Sir John Everett Millais’s classic 1852 Ophelia painting. That work depicted a young and red-haired girl floating in a river, singing before her untimely death. In her homage, Swift adopts a red wig and is seen falling overboard into the ocean, directly recreating the fatalistic imagery. Crucially, throughout the entire visual narrative, the singer and songwriter acts as a rescuer. By the video’s conclusion, she successfully saves every depicted version of Ophelia. Along with it, she saves all the “showgirls” who suffered similar public fates before her from their intended tragic end. The video is a sweeping artistic statement that rewrites a Shakespearean tragedy with a powerful and modern resolution.
“The idea I came up with for this music video was sort of a journey throughout all these different ways in which, over time periods, historically, you could be a showgirl,” Swift said after the video’s premiere. “Like, how you would be in the public eye back during the 1800s, when you’d sit for a Pre-Raphaelite painting. Or you could be a showgirl by being a cabaret burlesque club performer. You could be a theatrical actor putting on a performance. You could a Vegas showgirl. You could be one of the girls in the Busby Berkeley screen-siren era of the ‘30s and ‘40s. You could be a pop singer on the Eras Tour.”
