The Instrumental Sessions is an incredible instrumental album by talented musician Alex Haines. This record presents a combination of heavy riffs and catchy melodies.
Instrumental music can sometimes hit harder than songs with words; it evokes raw emotion on a level that transcends language. This is why I am always searching for good instrumental music, and I am so happy to have discovered Alex Haines. I’ve been playing her new album The Instrumental Sessions on repeat since I found it. What impresses me the most is how Alex builds each track like a story told through increasingly complex phrasing, heartbreakingly beautiful harmonies, and powerful rhythmic shifts. Any listener will be able to tell that the music was shaped with intention; that every note was placed with precise care. It’s no wonder that, in spite of being a singer first and foremost, Alex has chosen to release an album that showcases the richness of her songwriting without her vocals.
The composition is dark, yet delicate. The contrast between metal guitar tones and classical string sections is what makes The Instrumental Sessions so striking. When you press play on Two, the very first track, the first thing that will hit you is the guitars, which oscillate between sharp riffs and sweeping chord progressions. Throughout every song, tension builds and releases as profoundly as sung lyrics. The MIDI orchestral sounds add further sophistication and intricacy, grounding the melodic chaos and adding cinematic depth to each track.
What excites me the most is how human the entire record feels. The magic of instrumental music lies in the raw power of each phrase, and the interplay of harmonies and rhythm. And this album sets the standard for the genre. You can clearly feel Alex Haines’ influences like Evanescence, Disturbed, Mushroomhead, and System of a Down; however, this sound is all her own. I eagerly await her upcoming EP, The Rain on Your Parade.
