The Blur singer Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett have launched Gorillaz with four fictional members, known as Murdoc Niccals, 2-D, Russel Hobbs, and Noodle. They launched the virtual band to explore their curiosity regarding cultural exchange all over the world. Now, they are willing to amuse the listeners with their 15-track album, named ‘The Mountain’. It is an album with a visual odyssey and expansive tune, which makes it different from all others. This specific album is a little different for them as well. Both Hewlett and Albarn visited India last year after they lost their fathers, and Hewlett lost his mother-in-law. And it can be said that their visit to India has shaped the idea of this album.

Jamie Hewlett has stated, ‘It was all like, ‘This is fu**ing weird, there’s a reason why we’re here’. Visually, if you’re an artist and you go to India and it doesn’t blow your mind, then you must be blind, you know? Everything is insane and rich and colourful and mad and tragic and beautiful’. Through this album and its visuals, they have shown a completely different side of death. Their animated visuals navigated life and death and the transition in the ‘gloriously technicolour’ country. Both Albarn and Hewlett has witness the positive approach towards death in Buddhism, Hinduism, and Sikhism. And it has really surprised them in a good manner and helped them to have a new perception regarding both life and death.

This latest album of Gorillaz has both exemplary music and charismatic visuals. In this album, they have offered an instrumental title track with a contemplative tone. Along with that, they have also introduced traditional classical music. Albarn has collaborated with the award-winning Indian sitarist, Anoushka Shankar, daughter of the sitar virtuoso, Ravi Shankar. This collaboration for the album is truly mesmerising. All the 15 tracks of the album have a touch of Indian classical music, which is amusing in every manner. he even said that he probably had listened to Shankar’s work even before he listened to The Beatles, as his late father was fond of his work. Thus, working with Anoushka Shankar is like a full-circle moment for the artist.

The song ‘The Mountain’ from the album gave a unique charm as it offered an essence of their 2005 cameo with Dennis Hopper. And it has amazed all the listeners instantly. It was Hopper’s voice that showedGorillaz the importance of a multigenerational prospect. And that is what they have shown in their ninth album. They have featured artists like Johnny Marr, Paul Simonon, Ajay Prasanna, Jalen Ngonda, Omar Souleyman, and Gruff Rhys. Albarn has stated it was really ‘important to include all the people who died that we’ve known’.

Previously, they have worked with several artists, named David Jolicoeur,Bobby Womack, and Tony Allen. Albarn even said, ‘I wanted to bring them into the conversation so that the record carries everybody and the whole history of the band’. In addition to this, Hewlett added it is almost like thy are ‘talking from the other side’. It is no wonder that this album is so special for the Gorillaz. They have come up with a diverse album that is rich in texture and has a moment of greatness. The fresh ideas and innovative presentation have made the album unique in every possible manner. Their way of conveying death in a unique way has assisted them in gaining more attention. It can definitely be said that they have successfully delivered the pursuit to move forward after death in an innovative manner, and gave a whole new thought on life and death.
