Daily Music Roll: Describe yourself and your music in a few words?

Katelyn Seary: My friends and family describe me as shy, kind, and silly. I would like to describe my music as fun, pop, funky, and storytelling meant to make people dance! It has always been a goal to make people happy through my music.

DMR: What is the subject matter of your new single ‘I Don’t Know How You Do What You Do’?

Katelyn Seary: “I Don’t Know How You Do What You Do” is a song about being in what seems to be a “perfect” relationship. The other person in the relationship always says and does the right thing, but is it real?

DMR: What inspired you to create such a rhythmically and lyrically unique soundtrack?

Katelyn Seary: For “I Don’t Know How You Do What You Do” it was my goal to write a happy and upbeat song that will hopefully get people up and dancing out of their seats or even blasting it in their car jamming out. I was trying to capture that excitement of going into a new and exciting relationship with someone.

DMR: What message does the song convey to the audience?

Katelyn Seary: For the song “I Don’t Know How You Do What You Do” it was my goal to try and capture that feeling you get when you are in a new and exciting relationship with someone you like. Everything at the start is happy and exciting! This song also explores the relationship with a little bit of skepticism as of never feeling this way for another person before and a fear that the other person in the relationship is too good to be true.

DMR: Did you write the lyrics of the song?

Katelyn Seary: Yes, I did write the lyrics to the song. I actually woke up in the middle of the night with a melody in my head and I ran to my phone to record it so I wouldn’t forget. After I recorded the melody, I was starting to think of song lyrics and couldn’t stop writing until around 4:00 am. I always get so excited when I think of and write new songs as it’s so rewarding for me. I am always imagining to hopefully to one day perform the songs that I wrote and see people dancing and singing in the crowd.

DMR: When did you first start writing songs?

Katelyn Seary: I feel like writing has always been a big part of my life. I have always loved writing short stories when I was younger and even now. Music has always been a huge part of my life and listening to my favorite artists and seeing how people can really connect with one another through music is amazing. I started seriously writing music when I was 16 and I absolutely love it. I’ve never had such a passion for anything in my life.

DMR: When did you first start singing and how was the experience?

Katelyn Seary: I started singing when I was 6 years old. I had my first performance in my music school’s showcase where I sang “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus. I was so nervous but once when I started singing I felt great. I was so nervous before and after the song so I don’t quite remember what happened after I finished singing but my mom said I actually got a standing ovation from the audience and a lot of nice compliments afterwards. I couldn’t believe it!

DMR: Are you working with any production house at the moment?

Katelyn Seary: I am about to record another 3 songs soon! I can’t wait for people to hear it!

DMR: Which musicians influenced you the most in your musical career?

Katelyn Seary: I have always been a Disney baby. I grew up watching Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus, and the Jonas Brothers. They are definitely big influences in my music. I like to think my funkiness in this song was from the Jonas Brothers. I am also a huge fan of Taylor Swift and her songwriting.

DMR: Are you currently working on a project or plan to release some soon?

Katelyn Seary: Yes, I have a new song coming out Friday, February 19th called “Over Here”! The song “Over Here” is one of my newer songs that I have written and my favorite song I have written so far. “Over Here” is a ballad about coming to an end of a somewhat toxic relationship. Both sides of the relationship want to work things out and fix what is broken but is it too late? “Over Here” I feel is one of my more emotional songs and I really hope people will love and connect with this song.

DMR: What advice would you like to give the newcomers in the music industry?

Katelyn Seary: My advice would be to never give up! If you have a dream and you are doing something that makes you happy, always keep working at it. A big thing that I have learned is that we control our own destiny. If you have a dream, you have to keep working for it!
