The newest album of Foo Fighters, ‘But Here We Are’, addresses the harrowing and cathartic journey of dealing with the deaths of drummer Taylor Hawkins and Grohl’s mother Virginia.
When it comes to platonic relationships or camaraderie, rock music does not have much of a history and is often known for dealing with themes of sex, love, power, and status. Therefore when the Foo Fighters released their new album ‘But Here We Are’ at the stroke of midnight, addressing the loss of drummer Taylor Hawkins and Grohl’s mother Virginia, and their journey of working through heartbreak, it came as a wrecking ball. Comprising 10 beautiful melodies, the album brings a train of honest and raw emotions as they deal with the tragedy, and it also lays the foundation for “the first chapter of the band’s new life”.
The first single from the album, ‘Rescued’ was released on April 19 and stressed the band seeking redemption and catharsis. Produced by Greg Kurstin, this 11th and latest studio album by the band has grief and pathos looming largely in its songs yet provides a sense of optimism and inspiration to keep moving forward. This explicit personal note that delves into the deepest recesses of the artists’ hearts enables them to connect with the listeners on a deeper level and brings out a never before seen side of the band, as they take on an elegiac note.
In 2022, just hours before the Foo Fighters were scheduled to perform at a Colombian concert, Hawkins was found dead in his hotel room. He was 50 years old at the time. Being the closest friend to Dave Grohl, his death took a huge toll on the singer who had written about the former in a memoir, “We are absolutely meant to be and I am grateful that we found each other in this lifetime,” he added that he was, “my brother from another mother, my best friend, a man from whom I would take a bullet”. After the death of Hawkins, the band revealed Josh Freese as the replacement for him in a live-stream video.
Soon after the death of Hawkins, Grohl was met with another tragedy when he lost his mother. Having raised him as a single parent, in Washington, DC, where she worked as a public school teacher for the majority of her life, it was her support that enabled him to pursue music after dropping out of school, and the album addresses the angst and emotional torment the singer went through after this. From ‘Hearing Voices’ to ‘Show Me How’ each song in ‘But Here We Are’ comes as an emotional roller-coaster.
