The story opens with Long’s character burying Grande in a hidden underground bunker. The unsettling location is packed with black-and-white composition notebooks labeled with her insecurities, immediately setting a disturbing tone for the viewers. After covering the grave and leaving the scene, Long appears ready to move on. However, that plan quickly unravels when Grande suddenly appears in the back seat of his car and moments later, directly in front of it. The encounter causes him to lose control, sending the vehicle into a fiery crash.
As the flames rise, Grande calmly delivers the song’s central refrain, which turns the moment into one of the video’s most memorable scenes. Yet the accident is only the beginning. Long survives and attempts to leave the past behind, but Grande’s ghost continues to follow him. A seemingly ordinary moment by a fireplace turns chaotic when he accidentally catches fire, leading to a darkly comedic sequence that adds another layer to the video’s unsettling atmosphere. Rather than relying on flashy visuals alone, ‘Hate That I Made You Love Me’ uses its horror-inspired concept to explore the emotional aftermath of a relationship that refuses to stay buried, making for one of Grande’s most ambitious video releases in recent memory. The single offers fans their first look into ‘Petal’, Ariana Grande’s upcoming album and her first major music project following a period largely focused on acting. After spending the past few years expanding her screen career through the Wicked franchise, the ‘Thank You, Next’ singer is now turning her attention back to music with a record that already appears to embrace a bolder creative direction.
Set to release on July 31, ‘Petal’ remains largely under wraps, though Grande has shared a few clues about its tone. The singer co-wrote and executive-produced the album alongside Ilya, describing the project as “a little feral” in an Instagram post. “It’s definitely from a place where I have been maybe too shy or polite to tap into before. This kind of just feels like, fuck it,” she further added. The new single arrives after the success of Eternal Sunshine, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 2024 and proved to have remarkable longevity. The album returned to the top of the chart multiple times, including a notable resurgence in April 2025 following the release of the Brighter Days Ahead deluxe edition, while remaining on the Billboard 200 for more than 100 weeks.
