Coming across the improvised jazz soundscape by upcoming band Flounce seems to have moved me in ways I cannot even fathom. They have compiled and transcribed plasma jazz dance grooves along with the distinctive influences of progressive math rock and Bossa nova to create a meandering flow of musical pursuits. Their songs ‘Rip’ and ‘I Will Always Choose Me’ from their debut EP, Flounce has put together the cultural beats and pieces of contemporary musical elements with a thematic progression of perceptive lyrical structuration. Genres were combined and the harmonic balance between was accurately filtered to give away to a sound that expounds the very characteristic of artistic freedom in music.

Flounce

The band, founded in 2019 hails from Portland, Maine, and is the collaborative act of jazz cognoscentes Emily Bodley on lyrics and vocals, Conor Linehan on electric guitar, Nicholas Thompson-Brown on electric bass, and Gabe Blanchard on drums. Flounce’s debut EP also comprises two other songs, ‘Love Island’ and ‘Rose Gold’ that takes you on a favorable critical journey of influential notes by bands and artists like Hiatus Kaiyote, Lake Street Dive, and James Brown. As they step into the global exposure of jazz dynamics with their own ingenious deconstructive touch, their future looks bright.
