The anticipation for Lorde’s upcoming album ‘Virgin’ is already high among the fans and the buzz has gone even higher with the latest release of ‘Man of The Year’. The singer-songwriter has recently dropped the official music video for the track and it has moved the audiences deeply. The strong cuts of lyrics have been wonderfully portrayed by Lorde and it is an absolute work of art. Perhaps it is also Lorde’s one of the most significant and boldest projects till now. Talking about this track before, the artist said “the song I’m proudest of” from the whole album project.

Talking about the subject matter for the track, Lorde said that it is “an offering from really deep inside me”. ‘Man of The Year’ is truly one of the most vulnerable yet empowering works by the artist that deals with gender identity issues which can be relatable to many. The opening verse features sharp lyrical approaches like “Like new from my recent ego death/ Sirens sing overnight, violent, sweet music” and ‘Take my knife and I cut the cord / My babe can’t believe I’ve become someone else / Someone more like myself.” It is evident that the singer is talking about herself and how she deals with it. Being her authentic self that defies the boundaries of gender; Lorde has truly become someone else but more like herself. The poignant outro offers the sad side of self-exploration while the song all over offers an empowering essence that inspires listeners to be their true selves.

In the official music video of the track, Lorde could be seen slowly unveiling herself and performing in a pair of jeans with duct tape on her stage, showcasing the non-binary she belongs to. On some days she is a woman and on other days, she is ‘Man of the Year’. Ahead of the release of this latest song, the singer said “My gender got way more expansive when I gave my body more room.” Exploring gender fluidity and being her authentic self, Lorde is portraying herself through her music that can resonate with everyone who feels the same way.

Lorde’s upcoming album ‘Virgin’ is truly coming up with many wonders and it is evident that the artist has reflected a major portion of her life and identity through each song including the lead single ‘What Was That’. When Chappell Roan asked her whether Lorde is non-binary; the singer said, ‘I’m a woman except for the days when I’m a man.’ And that explains it all.
