National Award-winning singer Sonu Nigam has been working in Bollywood and playback singing for a long time now, and the artist has also released several solo projects. Reflecting on his remarkable journey, the singer also revealed the dark truth of the industry and the major labels that revolve around copyright battles.
The singer was recently found describing a particular time of his journey when his career got sidelined when the major labels tried to snub him over copyright and royalty rights. He recalled the time when he was literally banned from working under Zee Music, T-Series, and other major labels in the Indian music industry.
Sonu said, “My time came, then it passed, and now it has come back again. It’s all a matter of time. When I was at my peak, people gave me so much love.” He also added, “I was releasing albums, people were going crazy for them, and even my posters used to sell. Then I raised the copyright issue. T-Series banned me. Zee Music also stopped working with me. They said, ‘He’s become an activist.'”
The singer further added, “I never thought I would be banned. I believed we would eventually resolve the issue, but things only kept getting worse. When I saw doors closing for me, I realised that while they could stop giving me songs, they could never stop me from performing on stage.” Talking about the modern situation, Sonu said, “Today, things have changed. Those very music labels are paying royalties to singers. We now meet with affection, sit together and even share meals. Someone had to bell the cat.”

The copyright fight is a significant chapter in Sonu Nigam’s music career, and he believes that it is one of the purposes of his well-established career, as this mission has been previously initiated by the late Lata Mangeshkar. This fight ended successfully as the laws for music royalty have changed, and the same labels are now sharing a warm relationship with the veteran singer.
Sonu Nigam, on the other hand, is currently preparing for his upcoming music concert, which is scheduled to take place in Wembley. The Revolution Tour will start at the OVO Arena on August 23rd, and the India leg of the tour will commence in October of this year. After performing in the major cities of India, the tour will end in March 2027.
