Taylor Swift has spent nearly two decades moving through country, pop, and indie sounds while building a career around deeply personal songwriting. Although her music has evolved considerably since her debut, Swift says the country roots that shaped her early career have become more meaningful with time.
During a Grammy Museum conversation presented by the Recording Academy’s Songwriters & Composers Wing on August 18, Swift looked back on the songwriter she was when ‘Tim McGraw’ introduced her to the world. Speaking with Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason jr., the musician reflected on what has remained with her through years of musical change. “I’ve loved — and I think this can happen as you grow up — my country roots more and more,” the ‘All Too Well’ singer said. “The further along this path I get, I want to honor them more and more, and I feel more and more tied and more loyal to them — the people that shaped who I am as an artist and as a writer.”

“I was 16, putting out an album in country music that was all about my life as a kid in high school,” the ‘Bad Blood’ singer explained.
Swift trusted her instincts and eventually pushed beyond the boundaries of country music. Her 2010 album ‘Speak Now’ showed how closely she could still lean into the genre. After hearing criticism that she was not “country enough,” she responded with ‘Mean’, embracing its traditional elements and joking about adding “just as much banjo on this as we can possibly put.”

Her musical direction continued to shift with ‘Red’ before 2014’s ‘1989’ established her full pop transition. She also recalled presenting ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’ to Max Martin and Shellback as a sad piano ballad. Their suggestion to give it a dubstep-influenced production became a major turning point in her move away from country. Nearly 20 years after ‘Tim McGraw’, her perspective has changed over the years. Swift’s sound may have travelled far beyond Nashville, but the country songwriter who started it all remains an important part of her artistic identity.
