Pop star Taylor Swift previously revealed in 2020 about getting inspired by ‘Rebecca’ by Daphne du Maurier. That reflection is visible again through her latest music video for ‘Patient Zero’ with the ghostly presence of unrequited love.

‘Rebecca’ is a bestseller from 1938, which is based on a young bride who was haunted by the ghost of the first wife of her husband. Swift described that she took inspiration from Rebecca to write the track ‘Tolerate It ’, which appeared on her 9th studio album, ‘Evermore’. The song was written by the pop star with a desire to impress an old partner and all the efforts going in vain and unappreciated. Bringing up the topic of Rebecca or Mrs de Winter, Swift sang, “She’s trying so hard to impress him and he’s just tolerating her.”

After 2020, 6 years have passed, and Taylor Swift is still influenced by Rebecca, as this fictional character has become an inspiration for songwriting. In the latest music video for ‘Patient Zero’, Swift has wonderfully represented the fictional Cornwall estate where the story of Rebecca took place. It is a self-directed music video by Taylor Swift and showcases the dynamic skills and creative psyche of the artist.

With a magnificent music video, storytelling, and featuring stars like Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson, ‘Patient Zero’ is currently buzzing among all Swifties as well as other music lovers. For her creative contributions behind the lens, Taylor Swift has also received the honor of art direction at the MTV Video Music Awards 2026, where the video premiered. Swift made history by winning the inaugural award that no artist has won before.

The latest music video for ‘Patient Zero’ is also providing a similar vibe of Swift gothic, which is a sub-genre created by the fans based on Taylor’s dark and gloomy songs that include a fair share of darkness and haunting memories. Some of the songs that evoke that Swift gothic taste are ‘Out of the Woods,’ ‘Anti-Hero’, etc to name some.

Talking about her new music video, Swift said that it is inspired by “gothic ghost stories” and ‘Rebecca’ is one of the top influences among them. However, this time, she is not playing the role of the insecure new bride of Du Maurier, but she is boasting the narrative of Rebecca herself.

In this latest music video, Dakota has played the role of Farrell’s wife, who is being shadowed by Taylor Swift just like Rebecca. She wears the same clothes and mirrors her every movement and repeatedly tries to make their relationship fall apart. Later, it is revealed that Swift was poisoned in the first place.
