Dua Lipa Pays Tribute to Selena with a Cover of ‘Amor Prohibido’

Dua Lipa closed her Radical Optimism tour with a moment that felt warm and close to the crowd. She paid tribute to the evergreen Selena while performing in Mexico City. The show took place at Estadio El Campín on December 5. The energy was high, and people were waiting for something special. This is whenLipa moved into a cover of ‘Amor Prohibido’, and the energy of the whole space instantly shifted. It felt like a bridge between two eras and two very powerful female artists. DuaLipa’s tour turned into a moving trail of covers that felt personal each night and carried a different kind of spark every time. Over the nine months, she performed songs by many artists in many cities. She sang Ariana Grande in Miami and Aerosmith in Boston. Dua also honored Sinéad O’Connor in Dublin and Daft Punk in Lyon, and then she reached for Lorde in New Zealand. Each choice was intentional and showcased how wide the artist’s sound can reach. Furthermore, she also invited major artists to share a moment on stage with her and help bring their own songs to life. Billie Joe Armstrong stepped out for ‘Wake Me Up When September Ends’ in San Francisco, while Gwen Stefani joined her for ‘Don’t Speak’ in Los Angeles. Nile Rodgers also appeared in New York City, then Chaka Khan in Chicago, and Jamiroquai added Virtual Insanity in London. In addition to this, Neil Finn joined her in Auckland, and Kevin Parker came through in Sydney. This is why each stop on her tour felt like its own small world!

Lipa kept adding fresh moments as the tour moved on. In Seattle, she brought out Ben Gibbard for a gentle take on ‘I Will Follow You Into The Dark’, then later slipped into a soft and steady cover of Shakira’s ‘Antología’ in Colombia. Her two Wembley shows from June turned into a short film that captured the rush behind the scenes and the voices of fans who filled those nights. She will finish everything with three shows in Mexico City from December 1 to 5.

The tour lifts her third album ‘Radical Optimism’, which earned critics praise and love from the audience alike. NME said that the sound moved into new corners and showed a bright shift in her style. In other news, DuaLipa recently revealed that she is now studying “A-level Spanish”. This came after the news of her passing her GCSE examination!
