Wishing the Internationally acclaimed Indian singer and music director A.R Rahman on his 55th Birthday as we are celebrating his works on this special day.

A.R. Rahman is an internationally acclaimed Indian singer, composer and songwriter who mostly work in Tamil and Hindi films. He has composed scores of songs from some of the most famous Bollywood movies like Slumdog Millionaire, which won the award of ‘Best Original Score’ and the ‘Best Original Song’ at the 81st academy awards. He has also won the Indian third highest civilian award when the Government of India awarded him with it in 2010.

Early Life:

Born on 6th of January, 1967 in Madras, Tamil Nadu to parents R.K Shekhar and Kareema (born Kasturi). A.R Rahman’s first work was with the Tamil film ‘Roja’ in the early 1990s. He went on to compose scores of songs for several South Indian (mainly Tamil) films. Some of his notable works during that time was ‘Bombay’, ‘Kadhalan’, ‘Thiruda Thiruda’ and S. Shankar’s debut film ‘Gentleman’

His career started in the year of 1992, when he started Panchathan Record Inn, which was a recording and mixing studio in his backyard. After his success with the film ‘Roja’, Cinematographer Santosh Sivan signed Rahman for his second film ‘Yoddha’, a Malayalam film starring Mohanlal and directed by Sivan’s brother Sangeeth Sivan that released in September 1992. His work in the film ‘Roja’ earned him the award of National Film Awards (Silver Lotus) for the best music director.

Awards and Achievements:

His first big break came in 2009 when he worked as a music composer in the film of ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. The movie became very popular across the world for its music and direction and went on to win many awards and achievements for Rahman’s contributions. As a renowned singer and songwriter, he has achieved a lot in his career. He has been interviewed by various national media. His contribution is not only within India but he has also contributed his work in Hollywood too.

His first score in Hollywood was back in 2009 for the comedy film ‘Couples Retreat’ that also won him the award for the best score from Broadcast Music Incorporation (BMI). His other awards include National Film Award (6 time winner), Tamil Nadu State Film Award (6 time winner). He has fifteen Filmfare Awards and sixteen Filmfare Awards South for his music. He has also received a ‘Kalaimamamani’ from the Government of Tamil Nadu for his excellence in the field of music and has achieved many more throughout his decorated career.
