The up-and-coming music sensation, Leavell is stepping into a fresh new chapter. He is releasing a vibrant indie pop track, ‘Spotlight’. However, this is not a regular pop song – it showcases thoughtful reflections on the reality of recognition and fame. Paired with infectious peppy beats, the track brings out a different side of him, a side where he does not shy away from taking creative risks. We recently had the opportunity to sit with him for an interview, so let’s see what we talked about…
DMR: ‘Spotlight’ definitely explores a new side of you. So, what inspired you to take on indie pop this time?
Leavell: Honestly, it just happened. I was in the studio going through beats, and when it came on, I instantly started singing it without any idea of where it was going, but 25-30 minutes later, we knew we had something.
DMR: Since this is your first indie pop release, what surprised you most about working in this genre?
Leavell: The fact that once I started sending it out for reviews, everyone either couldn’t believe it was me or how almost everyone has been reacting to it. It’s definitely a feel-good record.
DMR: The song talks about the pressure of being noticed. Is there any personal experience that sparked the idea for this track?
Leavell: Well, as an artist, I dated women who couldn’t handle the attention I get when we step out, and some even acted shy about being in the spotlight when I was at shows or stepped out to events. It made me look at them in a different light, because so many want everything that comes with popularity except the spotlight.
DMR: What was the first element that came to mind when you started creating the track?
Leavell: I didn’t write the lyrics to this song, but when it first comes on, the first words, “She don’t want the spotlight,” were exactly what the song was built around. To me, that’s all I kept hearing while the beat was playing. So I decided to title the song Spotlight.
DMR: How was the music-making process?
Leavell: It was actually fun, I became a little kid again when I’m in the studio, we clowned a little between verses because this was something out of the ordinary for me.
DMR: The song captures both the thrill and the downside of social media attention. What message do you hope listeners take away from that theme?
Leavell: I hope folks can relate to it. Especially the ones who want to be famous but don’t want the headache that comes with everyone knowing and noticing you in public.
DMR: Is there any other genre you want to explore next?
Leavell: If I can find the right producer or beat, I would really love to make a Southern Soul track, like some trail ride music.
DMR: Your vocal delivery is also different for this track. Is there something that helped you get ready for the record?
Leavell: Well, honestly, I was in a weird headspace. I had attended my kinfolk’s visitation that day. That same week, one of my good friends was murdered, so I was just in a different mind frame, and I needed to get in the studio and create. I never thought in a million years it would have been Spotlight!
DMR: Since this is the beginning of a new chapter in your career, what can we expect from you next?
Leavell: I have a couple of international afrobeat bangers, and I just landed a collaboration with my Nigerian brother D Wesley and a well-known Brazilian artist that has a humongous following so I’ll be working on an afrobeat banger for the next couple weeks before I drop these three singles the 26th. Spotlight opened my mind to more creative possibilities. I’m pretty unpredictable, so there’s really no telling what’s next. I just know imma keep em coming!
DMR: Do you have any message for your fans?
Leavell: I would just like to say thank you to those who support and those who have always supported. It means more to me than y’all will ever know. Music has always been a part of me; they say I’ve been singing since I could talk.
