Garage Punk project from Atlanta, Play Center is back with a brand new EP titled ‘Times of Life (part 1), The Meaning of Dreaming’ and it is currently revolving at the center of everyone’s attention. It is a powerful music project with fresh new tracks that showcases the band’s ability to come up with something new and refreshing every time. We thank the band for letting us find out more about their musical journey in their own words.
DMR: ‘Times of Life (part 1), The Meaning of Dreaming’ is surely an interesting title! Let us know about the concept behind this project?
Play Center: The title comes from several things. There’s a band called “The Life and Times”, I like. The final song on the E.P. is called “The Meaning of Dreaming”. I (Kevin Lee) came up with the title as the writing of the music started to come together. The band mates liked the final song the most. That song is about not forgetting life’s dreams and moving towards them. Have fun while doing it.
DMR: Play Center is thriving quite well. How this 3-piece band was formed initially?
Play Center: Kevin Lee started it by recording several demos by himself, which is basically the ‘Moving on’ record.
DMR: Hailing from Atlanta, what are your views on the modern music scene?
Play Center: Modern music, especially radio is all a formula of crap. Auto-tuned, fake bull shit, trap music about horrible aspects of life. I think people rush and have little patience. Bands and artist saturate their market just to be playing every weekend. You can only get the same people to come out to so many shows in the same area or venue.
DMR: Tell us more about each of you, the three main members of the band.
Play Center: Kevin Lee, Founding member. Bass guitar mainly, writing all the lyrics and a good about of the music.
Andy Kendall, has been around since pretty much the beginning. He is on guitar and synths. He also writes a good amount of the music.
Jason Brewer, is our 3rd drummer. He is the longest lasting and have been with us for like 5 years. He is fabulous drummer that also helps write.
DMR: Other than punk, grunge, and industrial rock; do you feel like experimenting with other genres?
Play Center: We aren’t a punk band in the sense that most people identify with. Our music is all genres and therefore hard for some to place into one category. Play Center is literally about different styles.
DMR: Will Play Center ever want to collaborate with other artists?
Play Center: There are several collaborations over time. MARS Rodriquez on the 1st record and most recently Julie Tew, from a band Dirty Holly, sang some on the latest project. She is an amazing guitar player. She is set to play guitar on one of our songs for PART 2, late this year or early next year release.
DMR: How would you explain the modern punk-rock industry?
Play Center: All underground and in small venues. The music is thriving, you just gotta go out and find it. Spotify, and streaming has killed the music industry in total. There are great bands out, Amyl and the Sniffers, Viagra Boys, Idles, and many many people should know about them. SOOOOOO Many others.
DMR: What tips would you like to give to the other rising bands?
Play Center: Take your time and write good music. Record your demos at home, but go to professionals in a real studio to record. Save your money to do this. I hate hearing good songs that are crap recordings. Especially in hip hop and hard core punk, there are good songs, that all sound super rushed to put out.
DMR: Are you guys working on any upcoming projects?
Play Center: Always! The songs for part 2 are pretty much written already.
DMR: What do you prefer more, live performances or recording in studios?
Play Center: I personally think live music is the only reference to if a band is truly good.
