A2O Lite, the nine-member girl group launched by former SM Entertainment chief Lee Soo-man, has made an impressive entrance into the K-pop scene after its debut single, ‘Neon,’ climbed to No. 1 on Melon’s Top 100 chart, South Korea’s largest music streaming platform, shortly after its release. The achievement brought the rookie group into the spotlight, although its time at the top was brief, with the song falling to sixth place by the following morning.

Released at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, ‘Neon’ reached the chart’s No. 1 position by 11 p.m. on Wednesday, approximately 29 hours after its debut. While the track’s ranking later shifted, its rapid rise was notable in a competitive market where newly debuted groups often face the challenge of establishing an immediate connection with listeners. By 10 a.m. on Thursday, Soyeon’s ‘I’m Gonna Toesa (feat. Kian84)’ had reclaimed the top position.

A2O Lite was introduced alongside the 15-member boy group A2O Soul during a media showcase held in Goyang, near Seoul, on Monday. Both groups are part of A2O Entertainment, the company founded by Lee after his departure from SM Entertainment. His return to the domestic K-pop market follows the expiration of a three-year non-compete agreement earlier this year, which was part of the terms surrounding the sale of his stake in SM Entertainment to Hybe in February 2023.

What makes A2O Lite’s debut particularly interesting is the musical direction of ‘Neon,’ which takes a different approach from many recent K-pop releases. In an industry increasingly shaped by short-form video platforms and dance challenges, songs are often designed around brief and instantly memorable hooks. Tracks frequently run under three minutes. ‘Neon,’ however, stretches to 3 minutes and 28 seconds. This gives its arrangement room to incorporate several elements associated with earlier generations of K-pop.

The track places considerable emphasis on tightly synchronized choreography, coordinated stage outfits, powerful high notes, and a dedicated dance break. It presents a performance-focused style that recalls the genre’s established traditions. Its production also carries a familiar connection to K-pop history, with Yoo Young-jin, a longtime collaborator of Lee, behind the song. Yoo previously worked on music for prominent SM Entertainment acts, including H.O.T., BoA, TVXQ, Girls’ Generation, SHINee and aespa.

The group has also attracted online discussion surrounding its members’ appearances, with some listeners drawing comparisons to established K-pop figures. Aijing has been compared to BoA during her debut era, while Oa has reminded some users of Eugene from S.E.S. and Jessica, formerly of Girls’ Generation. With members from South Korea, China, Japan and Thailand, A2O Lite brings a multinational lineup to its debut. Although ‘Neon’ has experienced an early chart fluctuation, its initial performance has placed the group firmly on the radar. This sets the stage for its next steps in an increasingly competitive K-pop industry.
