Exclusive: Sunidhi Chauhan Reacts to the Grammys’ Best Asian Pop Music Performance Award

The Recording Academy has announced five new categories for the 2027 Grammy Awards, with Best Asian Pop Music Performance emerging as the most talked-about addition. The move is aimed at recognising the growing impact of global music, particularly across Asian markets, but it has also sparked a wider debate online. While many music lovers have welcomed the category as a long-overdue acknowledgment of Asian talent, others have criticised it as a form of tokenism, arguing that non-Western artistes are still being separated from the major award races traditionally dominated by Western acts.

Singer Sunidhi Chauhan, however, views the development as a positive one. Reacting to the announcement, she says the new category presents exciting possibilities for musicians across the continent. “Global recognition for Asian artistes is fantastic and a huge opportunity for musicians. Indian music is doing very well across the globe, so I have no thoughts about concerns over which Asian country wins. If we win, we win; if we don’t, it doesn’t change anything for Indian music, which is already global. Whenever the Grammy win has to happen, it will happen.”

Her comments arrive at a time when Indian music continues to expand its international footprint, with artists finding audiences far beyond regional and national boundaries.

The announcement has also generated discussion among K-pop fans, particularly because it comes shortly after BTS reunited following the completion of all seven members’ mandatory military service. The group has been a major presence at the Grammys over the past few years, earning three consecutive nominations in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category between 2021 and 2023. Despite their global popularity and commercial success, they have yet to secure a Grammy win. As a result, some fans believe the introduction of Best Asian Pop Music Performance could improve BTS’ chances of finally taking home a trophy. However, there has been no indication from the Recording Academy that the category was created with any particular artist or group in mind.

Much of the controversy surrounding the new award stems from questions about representation. According to the Recording Academy, the category will honor music that originates from or is widely recognized within Asian markets, including but not limited to K-pop, J-pop, and C-pop. Critics argue that Asia’s music ecosystem is far too vast and culturally diverse to be represented through only a few genres, even though the Academy has clarified that the category is not limited to those styles. Others have questioned if creating separate spaces for Asian music could reduce opportunities for Asian artistes to gain recognition in the Grammys’ biggest categories.

Alongside the introduction of new awards, the Academy has also implemented several rule changes. Artists can now submit up to four times for Best New Artist consideration instead of three. Digital-only albums will become eligible for Best Album Notes and Best Historical Album. In another significant update, songwriters and composers of original material on winning albums across most genre categories will now receive Grammy statuettes and achievement certificates, placing them alongside producers and engineers in receiving official recognition for their contributions.
