Mexico President Addresses Stray Kids’ Unexpected National Palace Absence

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has explained Stray Kids’ absence from the National Palace on Thursday, September 24. It was after she had earlier announced that the K-pop group would be visiting the presidential headquarters alongside South Korean President Lee Jae-myung. Speaking in a video shared on her official TikTok account later that evening, Sheinbaum said she had expected the members of Stray Kids to accompany the South Korean president during his official visit. The group ultimately did not appear, which left fans gathered outside the National Palace waiting for an appearance that never happened.

“We are seeing off the president of the Republic of Korea, Lee Jae Myung,” Sheinbaum said in a video posted to her official TikTok account on Thursday night. “We thought perhaps he was coming with the group Stray Kids. They are performing tomorrow at one of Mexico City’s most important venues. And we have already invited them to come to our country on another occasion.”

Her explanation followed comments made during her Thursday morning press conference, where Sheinbaum announced the South Korean president’s visit and said Stray Kids would be coming as well. “The group coming is called Stray Kids,” she said. “They’re kind of like BTS, but younger. I don’t know if they’re boys and girls — they’re young, younger than the members of BTS.”

The announcement quickly drew attention among Stray Kids fans, with dozens gathering outside the National Palace after hearing that the group could make an appearance. However, the members did not arrive. Instead, Sheinbaum and Lee Jae Myung were seen together on the presidential balcony before stepping outside to greet people gathered in Mexico City’s Zócalo. Videos from the scene soon circulated across social media.

The unexpected moment comes as Stray Kids prepare for two major concerts in Mexico City. The group is scheduled to perform at Estadio GNP Seguros on Friday and Saturday (Sept. 25-26), bringing their current run of performances to one of the city’s major live music venues. The situation also brought back memories of BTS’ visit to Mexico earlier this year. During their May appearances, BTS members met with Sheinbaum and appeared on a balcony of the presidential residence, waving to a large crowd of fans gathered in the Zócalo. According to figures from the Mexico City government, around 50,000 members of ARMY were there for the occasion.

For Stray Kids, the focus now shifts back to their scheduled Mexico City performances. While the anticipated National Palace appearance did not take place, the group’s upcoming concerts are set to give fans another major opportunity to see the K-pop stars in the country, with fans already turning their attention toward the concerts. The episode has also since added an unexpected moment to what was already a highly anticipated Mexico visit.
