MTV Video Music Awards Will Honor Shakira With This Year's Video Vanguard Award

Shakira, the Latin singer-songwriter is all set to have this year’s iconic Video Vanguard Award from the MTV Video Music Awards. The award ceremony will take place on September 12, Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ singer is already a four-times VMA winner and is also nominated this year for Four Moon Men. The previous recipients of the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award were Madonna, Janet Jackson, Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, and Missy Elliott. Shakira will also return to the stage of the VMAs for a performance after 17 long years. The Beatles, David Bowie, and director Richard Lester shared the honor of receiving a moon man for the first time in the VMAs of 1984.

The chief content officer of music at Paramount+, and president of music, music talent, programming, and events at Paramount, Bruce Gillmer said, “Shakira is a true global force who continues to inspire & influence the masses with her unique, musical prowess. She’s a trailblazer for women around the world & one of the first artists to lead the globalization of Latin music”. “Her massive impact across the musical landscape will be long lasting as she continues to create and entertain at the highest level”, he continued. This year’s Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award will make Shakira the first South American Vanguard winner.

After 17 long years, Shakira will return to the stage of MTV VMAs. The other performers in the event include Demi Lovato, Karol G, Måneskin, Stray Kids, and more to be announced. In terms of nominations, Taylor Swift leads the list with a massive total of 8 nominations, closely followed by ‘SOS’ singer SZA who is nominated for a total of 6 awards. Miley Cyrus, Kim Petras, Doja Cat, Olivia Rodrigo, Nicki Minaj, and Sam Smith, all are nominated for a total of 5 awards followed by Shakira, BLACKPINK, and Diddy with four nominations each in their bags. Fans can vote for their choices by visiting vote.mtv.com through Friday, September 1st. A total of 15 categories including the most prestigious “Video of the Year,” presented by Burger King® will be open for the fans to cast their votes in. These categories will be open for voting till Friday, September 1st. However, the category for the “Best New Artist” will be taking in votes into the show that will be held on Tuesday, September 12. This is not all, the nominations for the special categories like “Group of the Year” and “Song of Summer”, presented by M&M’S® are yet to be disclosed and will be announced later.
