Charli XCX has officially announced her next album. The project is titled Wuthering Heights and serves as the follow-up to Brat and its recent spin-offs. The album arrives on February 13 through Atlantic. Along with the announcement, Charli has shared a new track from the record called ‘Chains of Love’. This offers an early look into the world she has been building over the past year.

The Wuthering Heights album grew directly out of Charli XCX’s work with filmmaker Emerald Fennell. The musician was involved in Fennell’s upcoming adaptation of the Emily Brontë novel, and what began as a single creative request quickly turned into something much bigger. Speaking on Substack, Charli explained how the collaboration sparked a deeper idea. “I called Emerald and asked her what she was hoping for from my read of the script,” she wrote. “She coyly suggested ‘A song?’ and I suggested ‘An album?’ because why not? I wanted to dive into persona, into a world that felt undeniably raw, wild, sexual, gothic, British, tortured and full of actual real sentences, punctuation and grammar. Without a cigarette or a pair of sunglasses in sight, it was all totally other from the life I was currently living. I was fucking IN.”

That shift in mindset shaped the emotional tone of the album. Charli leaned fully into character, atmosphere, and storytelling, stepping away from her current reality and into something darker and more theatrical. The result is a record that pulls from classic literature while still feeling grounded in her own instincts as a pop artist.

Much of the Wuthering Heights album was created alongside British producer and songwriter Finn Keane, formerly known as Easyfun. Charli described their process as highly focused and deeply collaborative. “From the very start of our process we were discussing the Todd Hayne’s documentary about The Velvet Underground and in particular this one quote from John Cale where he describes that the main sonic rule of creating songs for the band was that all things had to be both ‘elegant and brutal,’” Charlie said. “We started to live by this description as we created songs for the Wuthering Heights album throughout most of this year. Finn came with me on tour and we rented a studio space most days.”

With ‘Chains of Love’ now out, Wuthering Heights is set to mark a bold new chapter for Charli XCX. This one would be shaped by cinema, classic influence, and a clear creative leap forward.

The 12-song Wuthering Heights album opens with ‘House’, a recent collaboration between Charlie XCX and Velvet Underground co-founder John Cale. The record sets the tone for the album and hints at its darker and more theatrical direction. The Wuthering Heights album arrives as the next chapter after Brat and its many evolutions, including the deluxe release Brat and It’s the Same but There’s Three More Songs So It’s Not and the remix project Brat and It’s Completely Different but Also Still Brat. Together, those releases marked a restless creative period for Charlie, one defined by constant reinvention and sharp left turns. With this new album, she continues that momentum while stepping into a more cinematic and character-driven space.
