It has been over a decade since Kesha dished out the iconic single ‘Tik Tok’ which rose to global acclaim and became a favorite guilty pleasure and party anthem for millions. But since then, a lot has happened and the beloved singer went through a massive transformation in her singing and her image. She also tinkered a little with reality TV and is in the midst of a high-profile court case where she sued Dr. Luke on multiple charges, including sexual and civil harassment and violation of California’s laws against unfair business practices, and has sought to void all her contracts with him.

Kesha seems to have finally decided to speak out about her story and step into a new phase of her musical career as she announced the release of her new album with Kemosabe/RCA Records, titled ‘Gag Order’. The album came with a promise that it delves into “the deepest recesses of her soul to date”, as has been told by her representatives, and in it, she talks about a number of issues including toxic positivity. On April 28 the singer gave her fans a sneak peek into the upcoming album as she released two new singles from it, ‘Fine Line’ and ‘Eat the Acid’, and the cover of the album itself provided a dark aura to it as the singer was shown with her head inside a plastic bag.

‘Fine Line’ comes with an onslaught of Kesha’s internal anger, honest emotions, and fiery energy as she pours out her soul into the lyrics. ‘Eat the Acid’ on the other hand turns out to be a slow burner of a major existential epiphany and thrives on its hypnotic intensity. These songs come as a prelude to the album which, Kesha explains, encapsulates her journey of dealing with her emotions, letting out her bottled-up anger, self-discovery, and finally finding acceptance in herself. ‘Gag Order’ has therefore been more of a cathartic venture for her, setting her free of her creative limbo, as she finally finds her voice to speak out, as seen in the lines of Fine Line, “All the doctors and lawyers cut the tongue out of my mouth / I’ve been hiding my anger, but bitch look at me now”.

Kesha’s new trial in Kesha vs. Dr. Luke case has been scheduled on July 19, after the initial February dates seemed unworkable for the parties, and the case might turn out to be one of the greatest turning points in her career.
