Pop star Olivia Rodrigo is paying tribute to her idol Robert Smith, the main man of The Cure, by dropping her upcoming album’s second single with the same name.

The announcement for the second single comes from the artist on May 19 through a post on Instagram that also shares the artwork for it. In the photo, Rodrigo is wearing a power pink top with entangled strings in her hand that imitates the title of the song. This single is quite special for the artist herself, as she called it “favorite song on the album and one of my favorite songs I’ve ever made.” The caption also read, “couldn’t be more excited for you guys to hear it.”
Olivia has co-written this song along with Dan Nigro, who is also the producer for the song. The track will be released under the label of Geffen Records. ‘The Cure’ is releasing on May 22, which is also World Goth Day, and this song also offers a nod to the British Goth band with the same name, led by Robert Smith.

Robert made a cameo with Olivia by appearing during her set at the Glastonbury Music Festival last year. This could be a tribute to the iconic Goth band of all time, The Cure. Rodrigo seems to have developed a good bond with Robert. In an interview with Zane Lowe from Apple Music 1’s New Music Daily, Olivia Rodrigo said that she has already shown a majority of the tracks from the upcoming album to Smith to get his personal opinion.
The artist has already offered a reference to ‘The Cure’ through the lead single of the album, which was released earlier, titled ‘Drop Dead’. This lead single has already made its place at the no.1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100. In the song, Rodrigo is found saying, “You know all the words to ‘Just Like Heaven.’” It is a profound reference to The Cure’s hit project ‘Just Like Heaven’, which was released in 1987. Fans know why Olivia sang, “And I know why he wrote them/ Now that you’re standing right here.”
The upcoming album by Rodrigo, ‘You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love,’ is scheduled to be released on June 12, and fans are eagerly waiting for it.
