It’s coming back! At least, that’s exactly what Powderfinger fans are hoping for.

The Australian rock favorites have been dormant since 2010, when the Brisbane five-piece closed the chapter on their career with a farewell tour that shifted more than 200,000 tickets. Now, more than a decade later, something appears to be stirring around the band, and the clues have fans wondering whether a major return could be on the horizon.

Earlier this week, a cryptic Instagram account appeared under the handle @thereturnoftheelectrichorsemen. It was a reference to “(The Return of) The Electric Horseman,” the closing track from Powderfinger’s 1996 album Double Allergic. The account shared evidence of billboards spotted across Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, each featuring a code alongside Powderfinger lyrics. Eagle-eyed fans also noticed five horse emojis in the account’s bio, seemingly representing each of the band’s five members.

The mystery deepened on Thursday, October 8, when an email from the band’s HQ arrived featuring the same cipher. The message was written in white against a striking red background, accompanied by a perplexing free verse. Powderfinger’s official Website and social accounts have also been scrubbed, leaving only a mysterious red letter behind.

Whether the clues point toward a new Powderfinger release, a 30th anniversary reissue of Double Allergic, or a full reunion remains unclear. The answer may lie in the final sentence of the cryptic text: “Everything else is a variable. Add enough time to enough variables and something extraordinary happens…”

Hailing from Brisbane, the ‘Finger’, as they are affectionately known in these parts, became one of the defining Australian rock bands of their era. They earned 18 ARIA Awards and closed out their original run with five successive No. 1 albums, beginning with 1998’s Internationalist. Their final studio album, 2009’s Golden Rule, became the seventh and last record in that remarkable run. The five ex-bandmates – Bernard Fanning, Ian Haug, Darren Middleton, John “JC” Collins and Jon Coghill, have remained good friends and reunited virtually in 2020 for ‘One Night Lonely’. It was a special concert that raised more than A$500,000 for Support Act and Beyond Blue.

In August 2023, the band reunited again in Brisbane for a fan event and Q&A marking the 20th anniversary of Vulture Street. Its reissue returned to No. 1 on the ARIA Albums Chart, setting a record for the longest gap between appearances at the top for a homegrown album. With Unreleased reaching No. 2 in 2020 and three Powderfinger songs making triple j’s 2025 countdown of Australia’s hottest songs, the affection remains strong. Their biggest international hit, ‘My Happiness’, also reached No. 23 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart in 2001. Now, fans are waiting to discover what the latest clues truly mean!
