Colombia was shaken by a powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake on Monday, August 10. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that its epicenter was near San José del Palmar in the Chocó region, roughly 250 miles west of Bogotá. According to The Associated Press at the time of publishing, the earthquake affected nearby cities including Pereira, Quibdó, Cali and Manizales and left more than 100 people dead and hundreds of buildings damaged. Tremors were also felt in Ecuador and Panama, where minor damage was reported. As news of the disaster spread, Colombian artists turned to social media to raise awareness and stand with affected communities.
Shakira was among the first celebrities to express her support for the devastating incident. “Beloved Colombia, my heart goes out to everyone who felt today’s earthquake and to the families enduring moments of distress,” the pop star shared on her Instagram story. “In times like these, we Colombians know how to come together and support one another. All my strength and love go to my homeland. Let’s hold each other close and stay tuned for instructions so we can help as soon as possible.”

“I have a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach after hanging up with friends who told me what they went through,” says Camilo, the Colombian singer and musician, in his Instagram story. “It was so frightening and painful. We are waiting to find out very soon the best ways to help so we can pitch in.”
Maluma was also among the celebrities who reacted to the destructive news. “It is heartbreaking to see everything happening in Colombia; I send a heartfelt embrace to all the victims’ families, and we are ready to help. Now, more than ever, we need that strength and unity.”

Meanwhile, Latin stars including Nicky Jam, Enrique Bunbury, Lele Pons and Victor Manuelle are using their social platforms to share updates and provide useful information about the disaster. “I have no words. My heart is with you, with every family,” Nicky Jam stated. “Colombia has always given me love, and today it is my turn to give it back. Stay strong—you are not alone.
The Colombia earthquake comes nearly two months after twin 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude quakes struck Venezuela on June 24, killing over 6,000 people and leaving nearly 20,000 homeless.
