Taylor Swift is currently the number one artist in the global music industry with the release of her eleventh studio album ‘The Tortured Poets Department’. With this record-smashing studio album came to her newest single ‘Fortnight’. The song is as usual an Antonoff production and features an unexpected guest artist, Post Malone. If you think about Taylor Swift and all her eras starting from the upbeat country Taylor, pop perfection, Taylor, to evermore Taylor, collaborating with a rapper like Malone, you would not expect the track to be this. However, the song maintains the status of Swift in the industry, by debuting at No. 1 both the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts.
When it comes to the song’s production, it offers nothing new, a typical Antonoff composition. However, at the same time, it will not bore you as it reflects the musicality and sound of the synths that will give you a feel of the late 1970s/early 1980s. I will admit that the song doesn’t progress anywhere musically. But when you give it a couple of listens, you will understand that the mood that Swift was going for would not have worked better if the song made some musical progress or went anywhere during its runtime. The composition is catchy and on the first run, you would definitely question whether this song really needed a feature. However, after a couple of times, you would realize it would not have worked as well if it did not have Post Malone.
Even if you don’t find Taylor’s music amusing, you would not be able to deny that she sounded amazing on the track. Jack Antonoff runs his magic again as Post’s voice melds so well with Taylor’s in the song. Thinking about why Taylor Swift is called one of the great writers of this generation, lyrically the song is also well made and perfectly reflects the vibe that the artist originally intended to go for. The song seems to be from a person who has been in a romantic relationship which unfortunately ended badly. But even then, the author seems to be conflicted about her feelings regarding the past relationship. Taylor Swift herself opened up about the lyrics of her dark single that helped her listeners understand her point of view better. “‘Fortnight’ is a song that exhibits a lot of the common themes that run throughout this album. One of which being fatalism — longing, pining away, lost dreams,” Taylor explained in the Amazon Music voice note to her fans.

However, despite giving her fans multiple projects in just a short period, fans are asking for something new and different. This army might be supporting the artist’s every record, helping her create an unforgettable run in the industry, but at the same time, they also need some musical growth which everyone knows Taylor is capable of.
