In a statement published by Mayor Olivia Chow, she said, “Born in Toronto, Abel ‘The Weeknd’ Tesfaye represents the best of our city.” “From Scarborough to the global stage, he has reshaped modern R&B music as a multi-platinum, Diamond-certified artist while using his platform to create a lasting impact for Toronto and around the world,” the statement read.

The songwriter also responded with his own statement published on social media. “I’m deeply honored to receive the Key to the City,” The Weeknd said. “It feels good to be home. Toronto is where I found my voice, and I’m committed to helping the next generation find theirs.”

The Weeknd, born Abel Tesfaye, is giving back to the community that raised him. He recently announced plans to support the Boys & Girls Club of West Scarborough and his former high school, Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute. His goal is to help local youth grow through art, music, and sport. He will help revamp the basketball court, build a mobile recording studio, and fund a new dance and arts space. He also wants to add a sensory room for students with developmental disabilities.

Tesfaye was raised in Scarborough, a suburb of Toronto. His time in the city shaped his music and identity. In 2010, he quietly uploaded songs to the internet. A year later, he played his first live show at the Mod Club. From there, his rise was steady and global. His early mixtapes, like ‘House of Balloons’, became the blueprint for alternative R&B. In 2021, he made history as the first Canadian to solo-headline the Super Bowl halftime show.

Now, Tesfaye is returning to his roots. He will perform several hometown shows as part of his ‘After Hours til Dawn’ summer tour. The tour kicks off on August 7 and includes appearances by Kaytranada and Mike Dean. Abel Tesfaye’s success is closely tied to Toronto. His investment in youth programs and creative spaces is helping shape the next generation in the very place his story began. Tesfaye’s efforts show that no matter how far he goes, he still carries his city with him!
