The FIFA World Cup 2026 is already set to be historic, with the tournament being jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. For the first time in World Cup history, opening ceremonies will be held across all three host nations, creating a unique celebration that reflects the global spirit of football. FIFA President Gianni Infantino revealed that the ceremonies were developed under the creative direction of renowned producer Marco Balich. The concept focuses on football’s power to unite people across cultures, languages, and borders, turning the opening celebrations into a worldwide showcase of music, art, and diversity.
This year’s tournament will also be the largest FIFA World Cup ever, featuring 104 matches across 16 host cities throughout North America. The competition officially began on June 11 and will conclude with the final in New York on July 19. More than 200,000 spectators are expected to attend the opening events in person, while hundreds of millions of viewers are likely to tune in from around the world. Each ceremony is scheduled to begin 90 minutes before the host nation’s opening match.
Mexico City will host one of the opening celebrations at the iconic Estadio Azteca, making Mexico the first nation to host the World Cup three times. The ceremony will feature a tribute to the traditional Mexican art of papel picado and include performances by major international stars such as Shakira, Burna Boy, J Balvin, Alejandro Fernández, Belinda, Danny Ocean, Maná, and Tyla. To mark the occasion, authorities have declared a public holiday in Mexico City ahead of the opening match between Mexico and South Africa.
Meanwhile, Canada will welcome fans with a ceremony in Toronto under the theme “Cultural Mosaic,” celebrating the country’s rich diversity. The lineup includes Alanis Morissette, Michael Bublé, Alessia Cara, Jessie Reyez, Elyanna, Nora Fatehi, and William Prince before Canada takes on Bosnia and Herzegovina in its opening match.
For many fans across Asia, however, the spotlight will be firmly fixed on Los Angeles. The American opening ceremony will feature a futuristic production centered around a glowing trophy-inspired visual concept. Lisa is among the biggest attractions of the evening and will be alongside an impressive lineup that includes Katy Perry, Anitta, Future, Rema, and Tyla. The star-studded event will set the stage for the United States’ opening match against Paraguay. It also promises to be one of the most talked-about moments of the tournament’s grand launch.
