Lauryn Hill has been recently honored with the Living Legend Icon Award. Ice Cube came to introduce the tribute by offering Hill her flowers. He stated, ‘One of the greatest voices in Black music history’. He even added ‘She achieved the depths of her complexity that defined her artistry’. Right after that, a massive tribute was given to her, which started with War & Treaty’s performance. They sang the song ‘His Eye in on the Sparrow’. This song was originally done by Hill and Tanya Trotter in the movie ‘Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit’.

Many other artists came forward to give a performance and give tribute to the prolific artists. A few of them are Doja Cat, SZA, Doechii, Nas, Queen Latifah, and Common. Doja Cat and Doechii came on the stage next, along with the band for the song ‘Ready or Not’. After that, they passed it to Tierra Whack and Tems for the song ‘Fu-Gee-La’. Selah came to perform and sing ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’. After that, Doja Cat came once again for the song ‘Superstar’. Nas came next and performed ‘If I Ruled the World (Imagine That)’ with Doja.

On the other hand, YG Marley sang his late father Bob Marley’s verse from the Hill duet ‘Turn Your Lights Down Low’. After that, Lizzo appeared in a dress inspired by Hill herself and sang ‘Doo Wop (That Thing)’ along with the classic tune with Rapsody. After that, Alexia Jayy gave a performance on ‘Killing Me Softly’ and passed it to Queen Latifah and Common to wrap the tribute with the song ‘Lost Ones’. It was truly a magnificent performance. So many talented music artists came together and gave such a brilliant performance.

After the tribute and a commercial break, Hill came onto the performed ‘Ex-Factor’. She said that she wasn’t supposed to perform, but someone had bowed out of the tribute. After that, Ice Cube returned to the stage to present the award. While accepting the award, Hill gave a speech and said, ‘I have always cared about the expression and the representation of the dignity of our people’. She even said, ‘So we put ourselves sometimes as artists, we put ourselves in situations to say things that aren’t always comfortable, but we understand that people will understand later. I fight for y’all. Everybody might not know about it, but I fight for y’all. And fight for y’all, it’s fighting for me’.

Hill also continued by saying, ‘We’re not going to let institutions, we’re not going to let traps stop us from arriving at that destination because that’s our inheritance’. She even said, ‘We may not always agree all the time, but I’m rooting for you, and I’m grateful that you root for me sometimes too. All of our differences, all of our uniqueness, that’s the beauty, ya’ll. We don’t have to sound the same, we don’t have to be the same, we don’t have to look the same. That’s the beauty. I love you’.
