One the most successful bands of the 21st century, the British alternate rock and Britpop band Coldplay, previously known by other titles including ‘Big Fat Noises’ and ‘Starfish’, has over 100 million albums sold worldwide. According to reports from the Fuse, they are ranked number 6 among the most awarded groups in history. Coldplay’s well-adorned musical repertoire also includes the sixth-highest-grossing tour of all time, three of the 50 highest-selling albums in the UK, becoming the first British group to debut at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, among others. The band has an accumulated net worth of $115.5 million – which makes them one of the richest groups in the music industry.

In 1998, the group first released an extended play titled ‘Safety’, after which they signed up with Parlophone in 1999. Their official debut album Parachutes which came out in 2000, included their career-turning single ‘Yellow’. The album received a Brit Award for British Album of the Year, a Mercury Prize nomination, and a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. Similar accolades went to their second album A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002), which included songs like ‘The Scientist’ and ‘Clocks’ which won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year. After the troubled production of the third album X&Y (2005), the band began to explore new territories in terms of music in their fourth album Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends (2008). Diversifying their music on a whole new plane, the band has subsequently released albums like Mylo Xyloto (2011), Ghost Stories (2014), A Head Full of Dreams (2015), Everyday Life (2019), and Music of the Spheres (2021).

The members of the band met at University College London and began playing together in 1996. These members included vocalist and pianist Chris Martin, bassist Guy Berryman, guitarist Jonny Buckland, drummer Will Champion, and the creative director Phil Harvey.

Being one of the most influential bands of the century, Coldplay remains extremely selective about their songs being used commercially, having turned down over $85 million in contracts from several companies. Regarding this, Martin said, “We would not be able to live with ourselves if we sold the songs’ meanings like that.”
