The single painted fingernail has become one of the most popular symbols in recent times. Right now, it has become a symbol of global social justice. It all started in the K-pop industry. The movement was first started by Hongjoong of ATEEZ. During his trainee days in 2018, even before the debut of the group, he was seen with a single painted fingernail. He was seen putting black or blue paint on his ring finger or pinky finger. He showed up like this whether he is doing photoshoots, performing, or doing any television shows. It is a statement action of Hongjoong that enhanced everyone’s curiosity. Most people thought it was his unique style, but it is his way of making a positive influence.

Hongjoong said that he is using the platform for good, and his goal is to raise awareness about violence against children. This artist supports the Polished Man campaign. He took the inspiration from industry seniors like B.A.P’s Bang Yongguk and iKON’s Bobby. Later, he even became the ambassador of the campaign. This campaign was started for a great cause. And that is why Hongjoong took the initiative of joining the campaign. In 2020, ATEEZ joined the movement as well. This small yet effective initiative has led to generating more awareness in a much more hassle-free manner.

The Polished Man campaign has a powerful message that one visible act can stimulate a conversation about a crisis that is mostly unseen. It all started with an incident between Elliot Costello, the co-founder of Youth Global Awareness Programme (YGAP), and Thea, an eight-year-old survivor of sexual and physical abuse. Both of them met at a trauma recovery programme in Cambodia. Even due to the language barrier, they spent two hours communicating through games. And by the end of the day, Thea painted Costello’s nails blue and drew a heart on his palm. From that specific incident, he started painting one of his nails. It is an act of remembering Thea and all the millions of children who have gone through the same situation.

In most situations, such cases of abuse do not even get to be a part of a conversation. Thus, it was Costello’s initiative to spread awareness. From this particular thought. YGAP started the Polished Man campaign. This campaign focuses on building a world where every child and woman is safe, and there is no violence. The choice of ‘one’ nail mattered because this can lead to more curiosity and help to bring the topic to the table. This specific initiative is helping to boost awareness about this crucial matter that everyone should know.

According to the report, one in five children faces sexual and physical abuse even before they turn 18. Not only this, but a child also loses their life due to such violence every five minutes. Thus, avoiding such a matter is not acceptable, and everyone should be more concerned about it. Thus, the one nail paint stands for one child in five. This is a visible symbol that will help to enhance awareness in a much easier way.

This initiative gained even more popularity when BTS’s Jungkook was spotted with one of his nails painted in the color blue. Alongside Jungkook, Jin also supported this initiative. It is helping young fans to educate them about this matter. This message attracted the ARMY more. The fans of BTS also set up a fundraising page for YGAP and local children’s shelters. Now, more K-pop artists are joining this initiative and drawing more attention. Polished Man has shown that changing the world doesn’t always need huge wealth. Even a simple initiative can help to make a massive impact.
