List Of Deserving And Undeserving Artists At The 2024 Grammy Awards

Grammys’ twisted rules left everyone confused as ED Sheeran got nominated in the Best New Artist category after being nominated last year. More surprises waiting!

The Grammy Award for Best New Artist has been awarded since 1960 when the second annual Grammy was hosted. Over the years Grammy Awards have been handed out for the records that were released in the previous year. However, Ice Spice, Coco Jones, Jelly Roll, Peso Pluma, Gracie Abrams, the War and Treaty, and Lainey Wilson are giving a tough fight among the four hundred and five competitors for the Best New Artist nominations at the 66th annual Grammy Awards.

The category of Best New Artist perhaps sets the most twisted rules among the other categories. ‘a new artist’ is supposed to be any performing artist or a well-formed group who releases during the eligible year. The Grammy nomination in a category in an earlier year of performance disqualifies an artist from competing unless the nomination appears from a guest position on another artist’s recording or from a single and the performer must not release a full album.

Meanwhile, Zach Bryan not surprisingly at all managed to get into a Grammy nomination for the best country solo performance for ‘Something in the Orange’ the previous year that was dominated ineligible. Just like boygenius that includes Phoebe Bridgers who has gained four nominations previously.  An early nomination will be disqualified automatically in the category under the assumption that the artist had dropped enough soundtracks to be eligible last year.

The artists who were after-mentioned seem to be front-runners to fill the available spots or at least make their position in the front-runners. The voters of the Grammy have mastered surprising us while voting. The previous year, most of the audience was surprised as Samara Joy got into the nomination. The artist was not only nominated but bragged the winning title home. The current year’s eligibility chart carries the names of nearly four hundred other artists, many of whom are highly reliable and also hoping to secure spots in the final list.

Therefore, for the most part, the Academy tries to err on the part of the commonness in this particular category. Previously, Lady Gaga, Whitney Houston, Richard Marx, and many other new best nominees who have the potential and even the winners were dominated unqualified depending on what were carp technicalities. Somehow, the Academy is now trying different ways to embrace artists and not minus them.

Undeniably, multiple artists who have been around for a while were lead-eligible this year. Jelly Roll released albums that did not manage to attract much attention until now since 2011. Other best new artist contestants who are not completely new artists in the industry such as Ava Max who gave hits nearly five years before like ‘Sweet but Psycho’ and ‘Kings and Queens’, apart from Max Cody Johnson was also nominated for a CMA award with the title of new artist of the year in both 2019 and 2022 and CoiLeray was also nominated for a BET Award in 2021 for the best new artist.

In addition to that, Peso Pluma is wrestling to be the third Latin artist in the last five years to gain a Best New Artist nomination.  He would be following Anitta and Rosalia, well Pluma was not allowed for the best new artist at the Latin Grammys and dismissed the nominations in the particular categories he was eligible for. Moreover, Fifty Fifty, Aespa, Stray Kids, and Seventeen are some of the K-pop acts that are highly hoping to create history as the debut K-pop act to drop a Best New Artist nomination.

Multiple other hopeful artists have been nominated for the CMA’s New Artist of the year including Wilson, winner of that category in 2022 and also includes Jelly Roll, the front runner to win and others were HARDY, Megan Moronwey, Hailey Whitters, and Parker McCollum. Numerous other Grammy challengers who were nominated for Best New Artist at the BET, Jones received the award this year. Ice Spice, Lola Brooke, and FLO were also in the nomination.

Some notable artists are giving heated fights for one of the eight nomination space, they are Sabrina Carpenter, Ezra Collective, Madison Beer, Fridayy, David Kushner, The Linda Lindas, Lizzy McAlpine, Mitski, NLE Choppa, Laufey, Pink Pantheress, Raye, Rema, Stephen Sanchez, Toosii, Yves Tumor, Bailey Zimmerman, Morgan Wade, Joy Oladokun, Keke Palmer and Fred Again
. As reported, more than four hundred artists are entered so this is just a teaser of the upcoming storm. The audience is advised to store their patience for the real surprise.

However, the Best New Artist nomination count at the Grammys jumped straight from five to eight back in2018, and again in 2021 it went from eight to ten. Hopefully, this year it will climb back to eight reasonably. The count of number of nominees has increased in the previous five years, the winners were Joy (2022), Olivia Rodrigo (2021), Megan Thee Stallion (2020), Billie Eilish (2019), and Dua Lipa (2018). The voters of the Grammy Awards tend to prefer female artists in this particular category. The winner of 2017 was also a female artist, Alessia Cara, the year is noteworthy for another reason and that is this was the last year when there were just five nominees.

Moreover, the nine other nominees of the previous year apart from Joy were Omar Apollo, Anitta, DOMI & JD Beck, Latto, Tobe Nwigwe, Wet Leg, and Maneskin. Well, the 66th annual Grammy Awards’ first round of voting opened on October 11th, Wednesday and closed on October 20.

The Nominees will be declared five days earlier than last year that is on the 10th of November. The final round of voting polls stretches from the 14thof December to the 4th of January. The winners will be declared on the 4th of February 2024, Sunday at Crypto.com Arena which was formerly known as Staples Center in LA.

There are more than four hundred entries up from 368 last year. The number of competitors in this segment hit the highest at 670 back in 2013.
