The Degenerates: The Degenerates is more than just a branding – it’s a musical movement created by two brothers. The music you hear, is both organic and genuine; composed by BenAnthony LaVoz and Mr. Foxxx. With a long lineage of musical background these two-artists pride themselves in producing a modern nostalgic sound that will resonate throughout the ages. The methodical and creative process that is undergone to create this particular grove, holds true to spiritual, ritualistic and a modern way of life.

The original concept of the Degenerates was erected in 2010 as a club scene promotional company, where the two were able to indulge in the sounds and culture of the nightlife. Throughout the years the degenerates have been an essential part of the Toronto NightLife industry and Latinx Community. Until recent The Degenerates have finally decided to join forces once again; this time to secrete their years of fun, wild nights out in the city.

The Degenerates: BenAnthony Lavoz’s repreitore covers the full feel and spectrum of all latin styles and genres all while Mr.Foxxx specializes in Pop, R&B, and soul with a touch of attitude. Together they are able to bring these two sounds together that create a nostalgic yet modern take on the future of Pop music.

DMR: When was your latest single, ‘Whatever She Want’ released? What kind of response are you guys looking to receive from the audience?

The Degenerates: Our latest single, “Whatever She Want”, was released on February 25, 2022. With this new release we are hoping that our audience sees the energy, diversity and originality of this composition, we see this happening on a massive scale and that our sound will resonate throughout all times.

DMR:How is the song different from any other contemporary track in the pop and funk genre? What is the one thing that separates your song from the rest?

The Degenerates: One of the biggest differences that separates us from most of the contemporary funk tracks produced today is that we did not have a major nor indie label behind any of the production; this also means we did not have the help of ghost writers and still found the time to teach and implement live instruments through the whole track. We were very meticulous on the sound and production. Every instrument was carefully picked to accompany the vocals and story we are trying to tell. This created the sound and story that is “Whatever She Want”.

DMR: What kind of instrumentation was used in the song and how does it impact the resonance of the track?

The Degenerates: The vast number of instruments used to create this masterpiece “Whatever She Want” was an electric guitar, bass, congo drums, keyboard, triangle, violin, trumpet, trombone and saxophone. Together they create a sound that is genuine, organic and stylistically conducive to create the sound and story that is “Whatever She Wants”.

DMR: What is the storyline in the song? Tell us about the lyrics, which have become very popular with the listeners.

The Degenerates: “Whatever She Want” is about two brothers fighting over the love and affection of someone. The lyrics depict the battle they have amongst each other stating their specific reason as to why they are better suited to give her the catchy hook that is “Whatever she want, whatever she need, whatever she pleases, I got it”.

DMR: Did you write the lyrics on your own or it was somebody else?

The Degenerates: The lyrics for “Whatever She Want” was not only written by The Degenerates but musically composed from scratch, something the both share great pride in.

DMR: When did you first start making music? What inspired you to do so?

The Degenerates: BenAnthony has been making music for several years now with various projects and solo activities mostly in the latinx music industry including winning 3 Canadian Latin Awards and touring with the latin grammys (USA). Mr. Foxxx has also worked closely in the music industry on and off for a number of years behind the scenes, now stepping into the light under the duo named as The Degenerates.

DMR: Which artists do you look up to? How did they influence your works?

The Degenerates: BenAnthony LaVoz: I try not to get influenced by modern day music as I feel it may jeopardize the originality of my composition however I am a huge fan of older music especially those that are performed live and with a band.

Mr Foxxx: I couldn’t say I look up to any specific artist in particular as I am influenced by a vast number of artists across many genres. I am also a huge fan of older music and the way the artists worked with their producers meticulously to produce an original sound and composition. This has definitely had a huge impact on me and the way I approach music.
