Shreya Ghoshal Reveals a Softer Side on ‘Bairi Piya’

Playback singer Shreya Ghoshal is exploring the creative freedom of independent music with her new song ‘Bairi Piya’, stepping beyond the familiar world of playback and into a contemporary pop setting. The release brings forward a softer and more intimate side of her vocal expression while retaining subtle influences of Indian classical music.

For Ghoshal, independent music has become an important space for experimentation, giving her the opportunity to explore sounds and approaches beyond the conventions of film music. She has spoken about how the medium allows her to take on different creative directions through new sounds, collaborations and musical ideas.

“Independent music has been an important part of my journey for a long time because it gives me the freedom to explore songs and sounds outside the usual spaces I get to experience through playback music. Every independent project has brought something different for me, whether it was experimenting with a sound, collaborating with another artist or simply approaching a song differently,” the ‘Teri Ore’ singer said.

With ‘Bairi Piya’, that spirit of experimentation comes through in a contemporary production built around warm synths, clean beats and a gentle rhythmic pulse. Subtle Indian classical touches give the track a distinctly Indian musical character, while the modern production creates space for Ghoshal to explore a more understated vocal style. The song also reflects her interest in approaching independent projects differently from her work within the playback format. Rather than being shaped by a film narrative, ‘Bairi Piya’ allows the melody and production, as well as the vocal performance, to take center stage. Speaking about the release, the ‘Chikni Chameli’ singer added, “With ‘Bairi Piya’, I was drawn to the melody and the simplicity of the song, and I enjoyed exploring this softer, contemporary space. I think this is what I enjoy most about independent music — the freedom to keep discovering different sides of myself through it.”
