Ariana Grande Sued ‘John Doe’ Hackers for Leaking Footage and Unreleased Music

Pop star Ariana Grande has just filed a lawsuit against the hackers who have stolen a large amount of musical assets and other content from the artist. This cybercrime incident was committed by a group of unidentified hackers known as the ‘John Does’ who have hacked and acquired plenty of unreleased songs, videos, photographs, and other personal material.

The lawsuit was filed on Monday at the Los Angeles Superior Court, and Grande is currently seeking identification of the unnamed hackers. She is taking action “to uncover the identities of these currently unknown and unscrupulous individuals in order to hold them accountable for their invasive and reprehensible conduct.”

The lawsuit further explained how the hackers have targeted the artist’s personal digital accounts, along with those of photographers and producers, in order to acquire more data and musical content. Grande is globally popular, and quite reasonably, the unreleased musical content can provide a good sum of money.

The lawsuit reads, “This action arises from the illegal hacking of various personal digital accounts of photographers and producers who have worked closely with Ms. Grande, resulting in unlawful and egregious theft, dissemination and exploitation of unreleased content belonging to Ms. Grande.” Ariana’s legal team is working hard to get justice for the superstar.

The lawsuit claimed, “These hackers (and other downstream figures) have then sold this personal data and content on the dark web for significant sums of money.” It also shed more light on the pattern of the sophisticated cyberattacks that included phishing scams in order to gain unauthorized access to sensitive material stored in the digital accounts.

The scale of this cyber theft is quite huge as it is mentioned that “In 2023 alone, 45 unreleased songs belonging to Ms. Grande were hacked, stolen and leaked by defendants.” In a music industry where each song by Grande brings millions of dollars in profit to the artist and the record labels, this theft amounts to a huge amount of money.

The lawsuit further added, “Since her music debut in 2011, hundreds of similar leaks have taken place.” The persistent nature of the hackers is emphasized in the suit, along with multiple breaches. Back in 2019, the hackers breached a photographer’s Dropbox account who worked with Ariana, and they leaked the unreleased images featuring the artist. A similar incident also happened in 2020 when they hacked a producer’s phone and gained access to “still-in-production, unreleased masters and demos and footage from recording sessions.”

In 2024, a phishing scam took place that targeted a technician who worked with Ariana, and that led to unauthorized acquisition of unreleased photos of the artist. The hackers have allegedly sold stolen content in batches at a high price, and it is still ongoing. The legal team wants to eradicate such hackers who “continue to cause Ms. Grande economic and reputational harm.”
