Amidst controversy after the singer Kelis’ rant on Instagram accusing Beyoncé of ‘theft’, Queen Bey has removed the sample from the track.

Kelis-Beyonce

In her latest released album, Beyoncé has added a track named ‘Energy‘ which samples Kelis’ popular track from 2009, ‘Milkshake‘. However, after the singer called out Bey along with  The Neptunes who co-wrote and produced the original track of disrespect and theft, Beyoncé ended up removing the sample from her track on the latest album Renaissance. The revised version is available on Tidal and Apple Music with the unchanged track still being available on Spotify.

The original song was sung by Kelis, however, was written by the Neptunes’ Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams, where only both the writers are credited in Beyoncé’s latest track ‘Energy’ as songwriters. The artist, after hearing the news over Instagram, went ahead and shared her anger and disappointment from her business account Bounty & Full. The singer stated that she was not notified before the release and came to know about the sampling just like everyone else through social media.

A fan page of Kelis on Instagram made a post about the news with a mind-blown emoji where the singer was quick to comment “My mind is blown too because the level of disrespect and utter ignorance of all 3 parties involved is astounding.” She further stated that she is surprised to know about the fact like everyone else and commented that some people in the industry have “no soul or integrity” hinting toward her disappointment toward the Neptunes and Beyoncé. When a fan in the comment section mentioned that this is a collab that the world currently needs, Kelis once again sets the record straight that it is in no way a collab and nothing more than a ‘theft’.

Furthermore, the chart-topping singer said that she is not disappointed or angry about Beyoncé sampling her song, but the fact that it happened without giving her prior notice. Realizing the importance of the Black artists and their art in the music industry, hitmaker Kelis pointed out that Beyonce and she have known each other for a long time and have met several times. So “It’s not hard. She can contact, right?” Kelis said.

This whole fiasco has caused controversy which led to the decision taken by Queen Bey about the recent removal. The album Renaissance has also several backlashes for ableist lyrics and the recent incident just added another point to the list.

At the moment, no spokespersons of Beyoncé or the Neptunes’ have made any comments about the claims.
