The legendary British singer Billy Brag has welcomed the new leader of Australia, Anthony Albanese as “the right person for the job”.
The music composer, songwriter, and activist have many things in common with Albanese. The two once met at the Sydney’s Enmore theatre in the late 90s, and immediately they started conversing about a “shared love of music and a commitment to the politics of compassion”. Brag has shared this through his social media.
Albanese is the new-elected prime minister of Australia. The two appear to have mutual respect. In a press conference, the newly elected PM shared a quote from Billy, “To Have and To Have Not”. He further added, “just because you’re going forwards; doesn’t mean I’m going backward.” It was a nod to the agenda of the Australian Labor party.
The election win of the ALP party can have a ripple effect in the UK. Millions are now frustrated with PM Boris Johnson’s conservative Government.
So, Brag said, “The defeat of the Morrison government has given an uplift to many in Britain”.
He even added, “where the Tories seek to use wedge issues to rally support. That the Australian electorate rejected such divisive politics offers hope to all of us fighting against the rising tide of populism. Obviously, for me, there’s the added joy of seeing my old mate Albo become the prime minister of Australia.”
Brag is often considered an activist living in the corporeal frame of an artist. The artist has repeatedly shown his disgust against the British Government and pointed out the flaws in their governance. He is also a firm believer of music who believes that music can change lives and heal the mind. He took many initiatives to support music. In 2007, he founded Jail Guitar Doors that sent guitars to 20 music enthusiast prisoners in the UK.
About the challenges Australia is facing, Brag said that the new leaders “are daunting, and I don’t envy him his success.” Brag continued saying, “I know Albo is the right person for the job. He has a socialism of the heart.”
