74 years old American music veteran Billy Joel shares his views on Fall Out Boy’s latest cover of ‘We Didn’t Start the Fire’, which was originally released by Billy himself in 1989 and instantly became a hit number on the top charts. The track reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart while gaining a nomination for Record of the Year at the Grammy Awards.

In a recent interview with the BBC, this music legend proudly said, “Everybody’s been wanting to know when there’s going to be an updated version of it because my song started in ’49 and ended in ’89 — it was a 40 year span.” Due to its widespread popularity across the regions and for more than four lasting decades; many listeners were looking for a second part.

The Vienna singer said, “Everybody said, ‘Well, aren’t you going to do a part two?” to which he responded, ‘Nah, I’ve already done part one.’ So, Fall Out Boy, go ahead. Great, take it away.”

It does not require to say that Fall Out Boy has done a remarkable job in crafting this track that successfully kept the original essence intact while offering modern updates. In the original track, Billy offered numerous pop-culture references spanning from 1949 to 1989. The latest rendition of the track is treated in the same way. However, it covers the span where Joel left, from 1989 to the present. The song also includes a ton of pop-culture mentions Harry Potter, Twilight, Kanye West and Taylor Swift, MySpace, Tiger Woods, Woodstock, and Michael Jordan, and the list goes on.

Not just pop culture references but the band has also included the events of tragedies by mentioning polar ice caps melting, Lebanon’s explosion, Sandy Hook, the war in Afghanistan, George Floyd, the Boston Marathon bombing, and many others. Quite evidently, the band did a masterful job of crafting perhaps not the second version but a newer version of “We Didn’t Start the Fire” that is more relevant in the new era.

The band dropped “Hold Me Like a Grudge” and “Love From the Other Side” along with “We Didn’t Start the Fire” on June 28 and currently, it is revolving at the epitome of everyone’s attention. Talking about the musical release, the band said, “So much has happened in the span of the last 34 years- we felt like a little system update might be fun. Hope you like our take on it…”
