Dr. Dre is embracing artificial intelligence as another tool in the music-making process, dismissing the idea that AI should be viewed as a threat to creativity. The seven-time Grammy-winning rapper and producer recently discussed the technology with The New York Times alongside music executive Jimmy Iovine, arguing that resistance to AI is similar to the skepticism that once surrounded drum machines and synthesizers.

“I don’t see it as a threat. I think the only people that see it as a threat are the people who have trouble creating,” Dr. Dre said. “I had a discussion with a few people a few days ago. They were against AI, and I’m like, ‘OK, you sound like the person that would have been against the drum machine when it came out.’ Or synthesizers, right?”

Known for his influential work with artists including Tupac Shakur and Eminem, Dr. Dre sees AI as something that can support the creative process rather than replace it. He revealed that he personally uses AI during production to experiment with ideas and understand what the technology can bring to something he has already created.

Dr. Dre said he uses AI in producing “as a tool to see what it would do with what I just did.”

His comments arrive as AI-generated music continues to gain attention across the industry. Spotify and Apple Music are preparing to label AI-generated artists on their platforms. Spotify has also been working with Universal Music Group on technology that could allow users to create AI-generated song covers.

For Dr. Dre and Iovine, however, AI can become another part of the studio toolkit. Iovine, who co-founded Beats with Dr. Dre, sees little reason to fear its impact on music. “There will be some crappy music. There’s crappy music now,” Iovine told The New York Times. “In the studio, when gifted people have AI, they’re going to make better records.” The discussion also brought an interesting name into the conversation. Iovine claims that several established producers are already experimenting with AI but prefer not to talk about it publicly. He referred to the “closet AI producers,” alleging Grammy winner Timbaland as one of them.

The debate around AI is not just about music. Writers, filmmakers, photographers, actors, and other creatives are facing similar questions about how much of this technology should be welcomed into their work. Some artists see AI as a useful addition, while others worry about creative jobs and copyrights, as well as the possibility of work becoming increasingly automated. Filmmakers have also taken opposing positions. Directors including Martin Scorsese and Steven Soderbergh have supported certain uses of AI, while Guillermo del Toro has strongly rejected generative AI. On the other hand, actor and writer Seth Rogan has also questioned AI’s role in screenwriting.
