The Recording Academy is taking another look at its newly introduced Best Asian Pop Music Performance category after BTS decided not to submit their latest album, ARIRANG, for consideration at the 2027 Grammy Awards. The decision has sparked a wider conversation about whether the category properly reflects the range and identity of Asian music and the artists working within it.

On Saturday, August 15, Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. addressed the growing discussion in a statement, more than a month after BTS revealed that they would not enter the Asian pop category. The category was announced in June alongside four other new Grammy categories as part of the Academy’s expanding recognition of different areas of music.

“There are some artists in this space who feel that this category isn’t representing the music they work so hard to create, in the way they wish,” Mason stated. “As a musician myself, I take that to heart.”

Mason acknowledged that the concerns raised by artists deserve attention, stressing that the Recording Academy needs to remain responsive as the music industry continues to evolve. “The Grammy organization exists to serve all music people, and part of that is working to ensure that no voice or community gets overlooked or misunderstood,” Mason continued, adding that the Recording Academy is “committed to working together to keep pace with that progress and ensure the musicians we intend to honor feel truly seen and heard by our actions.”

The Academy’s response comes after Mason Jr. previously addressed BTS’ decision, saying he was “saddened to hear that BTS has chosen not to participate in the Grammy Awards process this year.” At the time, he also said that as “a music creator,” he understood and respected the group’s choice.

The Best Asian Pop Music Performance category was created to cover a broad musical landscape, including K-pop, J-pop and C-pop. Eligibility is determined by the presence of at least one Asian language being significantly featured in a song instead of an artist’s nationality or ethnicity. That approach has already raised questions about whether such a wide category can fairly represent artists and genres with very different histories, audiences and creative identities. After withdrawing from Grammy consideration, BTS shared a message on Instagram expressing their hopes that their music could be “heard and loved for what it is, rather than being divided by region or language.” The group has earned five Grammy nominations since 2021, with most of those coming in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category.

The Grammy submission window for the 2027 awards closes on August 21, leaving the Academy little time to assess the concerns surrounding the new category. Nominations are set to be announced on November 16, and the 69th Grammy Awards will take place live at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on February 7, 2027.
