The frontman of the ‘60s British beat band Gerry and the Pacemakers, Gerry Marsden passed away, at the age of 78 this Sunday. The singer was famous for songs like ‘Ferry Cross the Mersey’, ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, and more.

The news of his death was disclosed by his British broadcaster friend Pete Price. He wrote on his social media that the legendary singer died ‘after a short illness which was an infection in his heart’. The BBC has also confirmed the news.

In 1963 the band’s version of Rodgers-Hammerstein’s ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ was the number 1 hit in the UK. It was also used as the anthem for the Liverpool soccer team. The supporters of the team used to sing along the song at home matches.

The Liverpool FC also tweeted expressing grief in his memory, ‘Gerry’s words will live on forever with us. You’ll Never Walk Alone.’

Gerry and the Pacemakers had been signed by the Beatles manager Brian Epstein. And George Martin produced their singles. Their debut song ‘How Do You Do It?’ was initially recorded by the Beatles. But they got the opportunity in the end as the Beatles went for the song ‘Love Me Do’ as their first single.

The British band Gerry and the Pacemakers made a huge impression on the American charts with their hit single ‘Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying’ in 1964. The band also played the song on the Ed Sullivan Show. It was only three months since the Beatles’ historic performance in February 1964. They were placed in the top 10 hits list in the US with their next song, ‘Ferry Cross the Mersey’.

Gerry Marsden was honored as a Member of the British Empire for riding almost £35 million for charity.
