KK, a popular Indian singer, died last night in Kolkata just hours after a concert. His official Instagram profile features photos from a concert he performed 10 hours ago in a Kolkata theatre.

After the event at Kolkata’s Nazrul Mancha theatre, the 53-year-old singer collapsed at the hotel where he was staying. The musician was declared dead by doctors at the CMRI hospital.

Krishnakumar Kunnath, better known by his stage name KK, is best known for songs like ‘Pal’ and ‘Yaaron,’ which became significant favorites among teenagers in the late 1990s and were frequently heard at high school and college graduations and teen cultural events.

“There is a certain energy an artist gets when he or she is on stage. No matter what one’s condition is, once I am on stage, I forget everything and simply perform,” KK remarked on his website, The Mesmerizer, in his memoir.

Pal, his debut album, was widely acclaimed in 1999. He began his career in playback singing in the early 2000s, recording a wide range of popular songs for Bollywood films.

KK has recorded songs in a variety of languages including Hindi, Tamil, Telegu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, and Bengali.

Condolences were sent out over Twitter by politicians, actors, and fans.

Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, sent out a tweet, “Saddened by the untimely demise of noted singer Krishnakumar Kunnath popularly known as KK. His songs reflected a wide range of emotions as struck a chord with people of all age groups. We will always remember him through his songs. Condolences to his family and fans. Om Shanti.”

Actor Akshay Kumar tweeted, “Extremely sad and shocked to know of the sad demise of KK. What a loss! Om Shanti.”

Renowned singer Papon Angaraag tweeted, “Life is so uncertain! Just too crazy this is for me to process! God give strength to the family! KK you will be missed brother! You, your voice and your songs will be forever with us.”

In his discography and memoir, The Mesmerizer, KK is described as a “versatile singer [who] has produced many unforgettable and everlasting songs.”

The bouncy “Khuda Jaane,” romantic pieces like “Tu Hi Meri Shab Hai” and “Awarapan Banjarapan,” and the melancholy “Tadap Tadap Ke,” one of his early hits from the film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam are some of the golden hits from the artist.
