Jhalaa, the trailblazing raga-based group from India, has created a landmark by embracing Indian classical music with their North American Debut. They performed on a global stage with the guidance of legendary maestro AR Rahman.
They performed in Canada at “The Promise of Music” concert, which took place in Toronto. The event has been arranged and presented by The Glenn Gould Foundation in order to celebrate the diversity of global music cultures that bring together generations of music lovers.

The setlist for their performance included a handful of ancient ragas, which were blended with contemporary expression and modern rhythms, offering an impactful sonic experience. Due to their high-octane performance that offered audiences goosebumps, the group received a standing ovation from everyone.
AR Rahman seemed to be very proud of the group that was built with his pupils and talented people who can reflect Indian culture on the International stage. Creating a fine blend of traditional music with innovative elements, Jhalaa has proven that Indian classical music is comprised of a universal language, and even though there is a lingual barrier, the compositions can still touch the souls of international music lovers. It goes without saying that the music group is enhancing India’s musical identity in the Global Music Industry.
The musical group Jhalaa is formed with 12 talented members, where 6 of them are women and the rest of them are men. This curated group only performs live with natural instruments, and they have been coached by AR Rahman. Each member of the group is a trained music artist who knows how to perform Indian classical music with a modern edge.
The name ‘Jhalaa’ is also an interesting choice for nomenclature as it is derived from Hindustani classical music, which is referred to as a fast-paced and rhythmic finale. The Toronto performance by Jhalaa is now viral on the internet among the Indian fans. Stay tuned to find out more.
