Indian-origin rapper Tommy Genesis is under fire for her new music ‘True Blue’, which was released on June 20. In the video, the rapper appears dressed in a way that many say resembles a Hindu goddess. She wears gold jewelry with a red bindi along with blue body paint. The video also shows her using a cross as a prop while making gestures that many found inappropriate. These gestures included her licking the cross. This has sparked a strong backlash from both Hindu and Christian communities. Many viewers feel the video disrespects their traditions and beliefs. Tommy Genesis, whose real name is Genesis Yasmine Mohanraj, has Indian roots. The controversy has quickly spread online with critics calling the visuals offensive and demanding that the video be taken down from YouTube.

“This creator must be cancelled because wtf is this , stop using our religion for your cheap publicity. Take art classes , do something creative,” one comment reads with another writing, “What’s happening to all the comments about cultural appropriation?” “Take it down,” another one suggested. One user on social media shared, “There’s a line between creative expression and blatant disrespect — and this crosses it. Capitalism or clout-chasing doesn’t justify mocking someone’s faith. Do better”. “A very dumb video and a very dumb story to justify it. This in no way is representation of roots or your vision, if you call this vision its crooked,” one commented while another one said, “This is not art”.
