Kelly Clarkson Reveals She Wrote ‘Underneath the Tree’ the Fastest

One person waited a lifetime to ask Kelly Clarkson which song she wrote the fastest in her 23-year career, and she revealed. In an “Ask Kelly Anything” video posted on June 12 on The Kelly Clarkson Show’s YouTube channel, the question finally came up. The 43-year-old talk show host shared that it was a Christmas song. She said the quickest one she ever wrote was “Underneath the Tree”. Kelly explained that she was in the studio with Greg Kurstin when they worked on it. Greg is the music producer who also helped her create “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” and other bangers. The song became part of her fifth studio album and is now one of her most loved pop tracks.

“I ordered sushi and when it arrived I had written it,” the three-time Grammy winner said. “I think because I really love Christmas I write them really quickly for Christmas — because they feel good, because you can be a little cheesy, you know? You don’t have to worry about being cool, which honestly that’s not a concern generally ever because I’m not.”

‘Underneath the Tree’ was a big hit for Kelly Clarkson. It reached No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It also topped Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart and stayed at No. 1 for four weeks. On her show, Clarkson shared how the song came together. She said Greg Krustin, the 56-year-old music producer, sent her home with a small piano piece. That helped them shape the sound of the song. The singer explained that it was not the full idea yet, but it started to form what became their Christmas “wall of sound”. The song later became one of her most loved holiday hits. “They don’t all come out like that, though; usually it takes forever,” the singer admitted of her songwriting process. “But that one was quick.”
