The fans of Sam Smith are surprised by the latest ‘Unholy’ performance that took place in the Castro Theatre finale. It was the final night of the 20-show “To Be Free” residency by Sam Smith. The Castro Theatre is newly renovated, and it perfectly matches the energy for the high-octane performance.
Electropop singer Kim Petras also joined the stage with Sam Smith to perform their duet ‘Unholy’ that instantly became a Billboard Top 100 No. 1 hit. The theater is 104 years old, and the new renovation was completely washed in red hellfire on the Saturday performance on March 14.
The crowd made a loud roar with the entrance of Petras, and Sam Smith introduced her. Smith was wearing a long chiffon cape, fluttering along with a long gown. She flipped her hair, and it was enough to make the crowd go crazy. The excitement in the old theater was trying to get out of its restored ceilings.
The song ‘Unholy’ won an award for best pop duo/group performance at the 65th Grammy Awards, and that goes for both artists. This marks a historic feat as Petras is the first openly transgender woman to win an award in this category. This achievement further resonated with the LGBTQ community, making it a success for everyone.

The Saturday buzz is only the preview of what Petras can do as the artist is going to perform in a sold-out show the next night at the same venue. This is perhaps the best way to say goodbye by Sam Smith for their fans whom they addressed earlier, “You’re f-g alive tonight!” The singer was deeply moved by the enthusiasm of the crowd and said, “It’s going to be a very strange thing. It’s going to take me a couple of weeks to get over this,” and further added, “I don’t think I’ve felt so much love in shows ever in my life.”
A lot of fans agreed to this statement as many of them came for the second or third time at the show just to enjoy Sam’s amazing and emotional ballads along with fans and their loved ones. They availed of a month-plus stay in San Francisco for this occasion only. March 13 is celebrated as “Sam Smith Day” in San Francisco, and even Mayor Daniel Lurie came to attend a show and embrace the artist’s presence.
According to the concert goers, they met the same people for multiple days, and it almost felt like the artist brought a community together through their music. Smith closed the musical night by exiting the stage while waving a Pride Progress flag, a love letter to the Castro and the community.
