In the last few months, numerous music artists have been hit or interrupted on stage during their performances such as Bebe Rexha, Harry Styles, Kelsea Ballerini, Drake, and many others. With this Summer of Hurling Objects like cellphones, beverages, vapes, sex toys, and whatnot; the music concerts are turning into total chaos in most cases.

In the most recent case, Cardi B got splashed with a beverage by a concertgoer, and in response, she threw the microphone in that direction. The incident ended with an individual filing a battery report against the rapper. With such concerning behavior, Adele even asked the crowd, “Have you noticed how people are like forgetting f***ing show etiquette at the moment?”

What is the big deal behind this? How did this trend develop?

A professor of communication at the University of Arizona, Jennifer Stevens Aubrey has intricate knowledge and expertise in the field of media effects and audience behaviors. According to her, there are two factors playing behind such behaviors.

Firstly, the long halt from public life due to the global pandemic made people shift from their best behavior. There has been a noticeable number of cases of manners and etiquette across the borders and concerts are just a small part of it. Drinking and other intoxicants also play a vital role here.

However, she also believes that the enhancement in para-social relationships during COVID could be another reason why fans and audiences are more likely to show that this is their artist and they have a special bond. “Throwing things at a performer can be considered violence, but another interpretation is that it is an act of desperation,” Aubrey said. For example, John Lenon being killed by a fan is a result of “negative attention is still attention from my idol” behavior.

A professor of forensic studies at Florida Gulf Coast University, David Thomas said that it could be the dark concert venue and a large crowd that influences bad behavior because of plenty of anonymity. He said, “Many find that attention or media coverage of any kind for bad or good behavior is rewarding,” and in order to gain fame on social media, people tend to do whatever might entice the viewers. This certain urge for fame or notoriety could be one of the major factors.

A professor of media and pop culture at DePaul University, Paul Booth said “Certainly the more dramatic throwing things has been fans throwing things at women,” which shows a strong bias towards misogyny.

Whatever the reason might be, if such incidents continue; soon there will be no concerts and only virtual shows just like the old times in the Pandemic!
