Just days before Spotify’s Stream On event, the company launched a new AI feature, ‘DJ’, aimed at giving users the ultimate personalized listening experience. Spotify already holds a paramount position in this arena with playlists like Discover Weekly that are designed to deliver the right musical piece to the right audience at the right time, thereby also connecting them to the artists of their musical taste. To take personalization to a whole new level, Spotify has partnered with OpenAI to create ‘DJ’, which, Spotify claims, knows the users and their music tastes so well that it can choose what to play for them.

Spotify will first roll out the beta version of the feature and it will deliver to the users a curated music line-up along with commentaries regarding the tracks and the artists and that too in an impressively realistic voice. The feature also combs through and sorts the music- not only the latest ones but also some of the old favorites of the listeners that they might not have listened to in years.

DJ is also designed to review the tastes of the listeners and handpicks a stream of songs accordingly. The feature refreshes the music lineup in accordance with user feedback. The more one uses the feature and interacts with it, the better the recommendations get – an AI DJ that listeners can carry in their pocket. In case the DJ makes a wrong choice regarding what the user wants to hear, the user has the option to move on to a different genre, mood, or artist just by tapping on the DJ button once more.

The music editors of the app make use of the generative AI tooling to provide users with insightful facts regarding the genre, music, and artists they are listening to. The feature uses a dynamic AI voice platform from Spotify’s Sonantic acquisition that generates extremely realistic voices from the text.

To create the voice model for the app, Spotify partnered with Xavier “X” Jernigan, Head of Cultural Partnerships, who had previously served as one of the hosts of The Get Up, the app’s first and personalized morning show, and his personality and voice won him a loyal fan-following for the podcast. His voice would serve as the first model for DJ as the app begins to experiment and expand.

The DJ feature is rolling out in English for Spotify Premium users in Canada and the USA. To enjoy the benefits of this app, one just has to head to the Music feed on the Homepage of the app, tap ‘Play’ on the DJ card and sit back and relax as Spotify does the rest.
