Selena Gomez Shuts Down Taylor Swift Shade Rumors After Knicks Game Comment

Selena Gomez has cleared up online speculation after a seemingly harmless social media comment involving Taylor Swift was taken out of context by some fans.

The singer and actress addressed the situation on Instagram Stories on Friday, June 12, after her brief “lol” comment on an Instagram post featuring Swift at the NBA Finals sparked conversation across social media. According to Gomez, she woke up to numerous messages about the reaction and felt the need to explain what had actually happened. Posting a casual photo from bed, Gomez directly responded to the assumptions circulating online. “i would never insult my friends nor was it an insult,” she wrote. “The comment was a reaction to the first slide on the page.”

The misunderstanding appears to have grown after Gomez shared screenshots of text exchanges with friends about the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs Finals matchup. Some social media users connected those messages to her comment on a post about Swift, leading to theories that she was taking a subtle jab at her longtime friend.

Gomez quickly dismissed that narrative and offered more context about the situation. “Second I bet my friends on the game,” she continued. “I lost but was poking fun at my opponents, my friends. Believe it or not I do have other friends in my life. But quickly forget that most assume otherwise.” She wrapped up her explanation with a reminder that the discussion had become far more dramatic than necessary, adding, “also .. It’s a basketball game.”

The original post that triggered the speculation came from MTV, which shared two photos of Swift attending game four of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden on June 10. The first image showed the pop superstar embracing actress Mariska Hargitay after an intense night of basketball. The second captured Swift celebrating enthusiastically alongside Este Haim as the New York Knicks secured a crucial victory. Gomez’s simple “lol” comment beneath the post was quickly interpreted by some online observers as sarcastic.

Swift herself had every reason to celebrate the Knicks’ victory. The 14-time Grammy winner attended the game wearing a playful “Stevie Knicks” shirt and fully embraced the excitement inside Madison Square Garden. While accepting her historic honor at the 2026 Songwriters Hall of Fame induction, Swift joked that her voice was suffering from the previous night’s celebrations. “The quality of my speaking voice is — it’s the product of two things that I’m not sorry for,” Swift said. “I was lucky enough to go to a Knicks game last night, screamed for 100% of it, and then I got home, and I was like, ‘Gotta stop screaming, you’re screaming too much, you’re screaming instead of talking, you’re too excited,’ and I was like, ‘OK, I’m not gonna scream tonight.’ And then I got to witness the amazing performances that I saw tonight, and then I just kept screaming.
